Finally watched Star Wars......My lord

Very underwhelming. Just a bad movie IMO.
I'm not a die hard Star Wars fan, but very much enjoy the originals. This one had so many flaws.
The good
-The visuals. I thought the movie looked good from a visual standpoint.
-The girl. I thought she had potential. She can be a good character going forward.
The Bad
-The plot. Did they just rehash the original? Were they trying to make it obvious? All the way till the last scene in blowing up the new Death Star (or whatever it was called).
-The black dude. As good as I thought the girl was, he provided nothing though. It got to a point where I just didn't want him to speak anymore (cue the racist remarks). His dialogue with the girl was cringe-worthy from the get-go. Too many one liners and hokey jokes.
-Harrison Ford. It's obvious he hasn't done anything in a while. His acting was just bad IMO.
The Ugly
-Princess Leia, the years have not been kind to you sweetheart . It's hard to act when your face can't show any expressions due to plastic surgery. Harrison Ford probably had a contingency before coming back that he would not have a kissing scene with her again.
-The Villain. At first you think this guy has potential. A second coming of Vader? Not exactly, but he seemed worthy.....SEEMED being the key word. My god, how they completely fricked that up. Did they think having a whiny little teenage brat as a villain would work? What a little cry baby bitch that guy was. I can't think of a worse villain in a major movie.

I mean that was the point. To show how immature he is. He's powerful as frick, but he's a crybaby with a short temper. That's what they went for.

I've actually found myself bored with it on rewatch. Ep 8 better be original or they may start losing some of the fan base.

There's a way to show immaturity without making him look so weak and whiny. If that's what they went for it didn't work IMO. He was undermined the whole movie.
ETA: and if they wanted to show how "powerful as frick" he was, why let a little girl who doesn't even know she's a jedi bitch slap him the whole movie?

O/U 100 downvotes?
Wait, it was well received here?
I find that surprising as critical as the M/TV board is.

That was the point. He is kind of a bitch. But that's what makes him interesting. He's where Anakin should have been at the end of Episode III. It worked, and he'll only continue to get stronger.

This board is 95% Star Wars nerds and you just triggered all of them.

Because he's poorly trained, is not as powerful as he thinks he is, and is conflicted as hell. Confliction and the Force don't really go all that well together. Kylo Ren is weak, and he himself knows it.
Everything you need to know about the character is really shown by his lightsaber. Highly flawed, un-focused, conflicted, out of control, unstable, and dangerous. Unlike say Darth Maul, where his lightsaber just says he's a bad arse and that's it.
Kylo Ren is a character first and better than Vader was in ANH. Go back and watch that one, because people sass off to Vader all the time in that one. No one has the balls to do such a thing in ESB.

Not just with the black guy, the movie was full of them. Still liked the movie but this element was written for the modern day twentysomething and younger....sadly. Us Ep. 4,5,6 junkies were spoiled.

Because you're missing the point. It needed to be a soft reboot from what they're planning on doing with the franchise. Yes, the plot is roughly ANH, but I think it had a better hero, a better villain (just off of ANH alone), a better sacrifice, a better lightsaber duel, and better final scene. I think it's second next to Empire and narrowly better than ANH.

If you go back and re watch, ANH and Jedi had just as bad if not worse dialogue.
I mean seriously I love those fricking movies but let's not act like The force awakens dialogue was any worse. The only Star Wars movie with good dialogue was Empire.

You got that right, he should have left his face covered.

This is what ruins it though. You never got a sense that he was this evil unstoppable villain, which is really what villains are supposed to elicit in you.
A good villain, you should be thinking "there's no way the hero can beat this guy". He's too powerful, it's a lost cause. Which makes it more riveting when they finally do.
Never did you get that sense here. Actually, you get the opposite. You think "this dude's such a little bitch there's no way the dark side wins."
They should have played more on the conflicting part, and not made him look as weak as they did.

To add to what's already been said, Kylo Ren was mortally wounded by Chewbacca's bowcaster. They made it a point in the film to show how destructive that weapon was, typically knocking stormtroopers off their feet and throwing them several yards away. He had also just murdered his father, adding to the confliction that was already mentioned. He was an emotional and physical wreck at that point.
ETA: Not to mention that Snoke wants him to bring Rey to him in order to turn her. Han told the truth when he told Kylo that Snoke would be done with him when he gets what he wants... which would likely be Rey in this story. I can imagine that is eating away at him.

Thanks for final delivering the one true enlightening review. All the hundreds of others on this board didn't do it for me.

quote:I can understand some of the gripes about the plot; it wasn't wholly original. However, what they did was intentional. It brought people back to the "Star Wars" they knew and loved. Made the fans feel comfortable. But it was different enough to not be a complete rehash. It is undeniable that this FELT like a "Star Wars" movie compared to those prequel films. And as far as Death Stars go, yeah, it's kind of lame...but let's not act like the military doesn't keep making the same weapons just making them bigger and more modern. I mean, how boring is it that they still use planes and aircraft carriers? Don't they know we saw all of that back in the '40s...

Boyega definitely took a little getting used to, but he did improve as the film went on. Didn't mind him nearly as much on my second viewing.
Ford was probably done with this character back in 1983. Didn't he want to be killed off back then? He got better at being Han as the movie went on.

The gripe about Kylo Ren just makes me think you're a little stupid and need things to be painted for you in black and white.
