Advocate article

quote:

Opponents’ marching bands will no longer perform at halftime of LSU games, according to a new policy the athletic department instituted starting this season, team spokesman Michael Bonnette confirmed Friday.

“It’s a safety issue,” Bonnette told The Advocate. “We don’t have room down there for both bands. In order for bands to perform at half, they’ve got to come down to the field before the first half ends. That’s a lot of people on the sideline.”

Bonnette declined comment when asked if there have been any sideline incidents between opposing band members or between band members and LSU fans. None have been reported. The new policy would prevent potential skirmishes.

LSU’s new policy will affect traveling bands, and at least one official isn’t happy about it.

Jacksonville State band director Ken Bodiford told Montgomery television station WFSA that he will no longer bring JSU’s band to the Sept. 10 meeting with the Tigers, LSU’s home opener. Bodiford said he can’t justify the $120,000 expense of bus rental, hotel accommodations and meals for such a trip if the band was not allowed to perform at halftime.

The decision likely means Southeastern Conference schools, like Alabama, will no longer travel their full band to LSU games. The co-director for Alabama’s Million Dollar Band, in a post on Facebook, said the school would only send a small pep band as a result of the new policy.

They've managed to accommodate both bands for 50 years but now it's a safety issue?

Come on, man.

One of the more bizarre things I've ever heard of. Sounds like LSU is afraid of a law suit.

They've gotta leave time slots for concerts.

Many people don't go to the games to see the opponents' football teams.

At least in the second half.

Are people actually upset with this?

I'm confused. Not having to hear Alabama's full band when they come here is a positive, people.

They should still allow aTm band though.

Terrible, but I hope this also means no concerts, either. College football halftimes should consist of band entertainment only.

Either the last time A&M was here, or the time before (I forget exactly), their band cost us. We were on the goal line and their band was there on the field just behind the end zone and they all started screaming, and they made so much noise it disrupted our play. It ticked me off because it struck me as unfair that they did that standing just outside the end zone. Stuff other teams's bands.

Most people don't even last till halftime so why does this matter.

B.S. - where I sit, my only chance to hit them with piss bombs is when they go on the field.

It's not as dangerous as having 100,000 people go borderline comatose during 10 minutes of Latin flair by the Golden Band for the 100th time.
