Plus how am I sposed to fill up on the midget portions?

I bet you load up on free bread and crackers and work your waiter to death refilling your sweet tea. Probably complain about the portions as well.
If you want to stuff yourself like a slob looking like a slob go eat at copelands.

So just don't go to fancy restaurants and stop hanging out with people that might invite you to fancy restaurants. See, it's easy.
Outback, Golden Corral and Olive Garden need business too.

My wife doesn't really get the 'fine dining' experience either. When we used to do weekends in N.O., I would geek out about planning brunches, lunches and dinners to make sure we hit all the high points- she couldn't care less, as long as we ate when we were hungry. Some people like the fine dining experience and like to be able to try foods that they can't get at their local establishment, like carpaccio or rabbit- Some people are just more interested in filing their bellies for energy. the experience is all in what you make it. Enjoy the time with your family/friends and appreciate that you have the ability to enjoy the finer things in life, like fine dining.

Well to be fair, Galatoires is the only restaurant in the city that still requires a jacket for men. It's really not even a top 20 restaurant in Nola so see if you can change their mind. LOL
And please know, that there are a shite ton of great restaurants in the middle ground, above the burger joint but below fancy smancy, especially in Nola.
I like getting dressed up once or twice a year and doing fine dining. It's just a great experience and I can't understand how it would make you feel uncomfortable.

You came to all of these conclusions simply by reading the OP's post?
The guy doesn't like having to dress up like it's Halloween to go eat at places that may be way more proud of their food then he thinks they should be.
I agree with the OP. I would rather be comfortable in a laid back place with good food than dressed up at night or on a weekend in a stuffy place with good food.

True story. I'm originally from New Iberia. There are probably 20 guys in NI who own a coat and tie. When I went home for a visit in the early 70s my old HS buddies (also coming in for the holidays) said "Let's try this new restaurant on Main Street."
The 4 of us went through the door and were told "Sorry, gentlemen. You must wear a coat and tie here."
Me: "How long have you been open?"
Him: "A little over a month."
Me: "I'll give you another month tops".
Then we walked out.
The restaurant closed down the next month.
Fancy restaurants are fine for people who like that stuff. It's all about niche marketing.

This is a painful reminder of the times we live in.

Hell yeah! The gas station has some mean hot dogs for $1.50

Many of the best restaurants are no longer formal fancy places. Those days are dead in some ways.
There are many places that have high end food but aren't overly formal.

This morning I went to Walmart for a bag of briquettes to kill time before Starbucks opening. They had a display of bananas with a sign "60 cents each.'
Ten minutes later I walk into Starbucks. They had a display at the counter with bananas "$1 each."
The bananas looked the same. But the atmosphere at SB is a lot nicer than WM. OTOH while I was sitting in the comfy chair reading the paper at SB I had to deal with the damn fruit flies from their bananas.

For me, with Copa America soccer on television, it would be great if, during dinner, I could kick back and watch some soccer while eating pretty good, cheap food. That is a much more enjoyable experience for me than sweating through my button-down while I eat food that I know will cost hundreds of dollars.
So go watch your soccer match at the bar.
What's the point of this thread anyway?

Thinking people at "fancy" restaurants are pretentious & thinking you can get a remotely comparable meal at a $10/entree restaurant and a good high-end restaurant are two entirely different arguments.
