So I have been reading a lot about Marcello recently. Even without the JFK implications, he was quite an interesting character study. The power he imposed running the gulf coast will never be duplicated.

He once got my Italian grandfather out of some trouble with the FBI. My grandfather was brought to court after the FBI ran a sting in his old French Market bar on Decatur. The FBI accused him of distributing liquor wholesale on a retail only license after an undercover agent got the bartender to sell him a bottle of whiskey.

Marcello is said to have called my grandfather before his court date and introduced himself, saying not to worry about it and that Italians need to have each other's backs. This was supposedly the only conversation they ever had.

My grandfather shows up for his court date. The judge doesn't let the prosecution say a word. Instead he blasts them about entrapping a stand up businessman and quickly dismissed the case.

So, as for the JFK theories, I have no idea whether I believe the man had the capabilities of pulling something like that off. But there definitely is a lot of smoke there. In fact, Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert DeNiro are said to be in talks to make a film out of the book Legacy of Secrecy detailing Carlos Marcello including his potential involvement in a JFK plot.

In the meantime, here's a quick clip of Marcello in action:

I read a book about twenty years ago about Marcello's probably involvement with the JFK assassination. There was some pretty compelling and damning evidence against him.

Oswald acted alone with the CIA and LBJ.

I think the "with" in your sentence structure pretty much invalidates the premise of "alone".

I'll say this, New Orleans would be a nicer place if us Italians were still in charge.

(like most Italians I have little ties to italy and Ancestry says I'm more eastern European than Italian but I claim Italian )

There certainly would be a lot less crime in the French Quarter.

My coworker's father ran book for Marcello when he was young. Stopped after marriage and they began to have kids. In regards to JFK, he maintains people were in the sewer drain on the street and the grassy knoll...

I love the old Marcello stories. I'm going to check out the two books mentioned above but if anyone can recommend other titles I'd appreciate it

Marcello sounded like Tom Benson in 1985 before he bought the team. "I'm just a car salesman trying to make a living."
