These aren't people who would take your money and "dick around" for an hour. The hitting coach was good to the point to where he could notice what you were doing wrong right away, calmly get you to fix it, and all of a sudden you can hit the ball again. He is really really good. They are way more knowledgeable than your local high school coach.
At an elite level academy, I can see it, but there are a ton of these guys running around the southeast changing up the mechanics of hitters and pitchers left and right and high school coaches are left to deal with the aftermath. I would have no qualms about a coach who instituted a rule about no outside instruction for his program to be honest. It's not worth the headache IMO.
If you want to practice on your own, be my guest. If you want to have your hitting coach consult with your high school coach, I can live with it. But the rest of that outside stuff rubs me the wrong way.
I probably sound like I'm some high school coach myself but I'm just relaying the experiences I had in high school and with guys I played with on travel teams and what not.
On another anecdotal tangent, I find the more people discuss their kid's hitting coach or pitching coach, the more likely their kid is to suck compared to his peers, or at the very least be a headcase to deal with when you include the parents.

Well I'm an umpire and have seen some really bad travel teams and some pretty good rec teams.
Well yeah, there are always exceptions to the rule. Like I said, my kids play rec and do a few tournaments, then all-stars. I am anti travel ball...but I am not going to sit here and act like there's not a difference in the level of competition. There just is, and it's noticeable. Most of those people are wasting $ and coming close to selling their souls...some genuinely want better competition, some think it's the best path to the majors, and some (I'd say most) do it for social reasons. Either way, I think there are more advantages to a kid playing multiple sports then year long travel ball.

It really is kind of sad what's happened to rec league baseball. I went out to watch a young cousin of mine recently and it was just terrible. They're even having to play games against teams at other parks because they don't have enough teams signed up.
We have probably the strongest one in the state or close to it. Tons of teams, good competition but there are still those teams that you play where it's just batting practice and that turns teams off.
If you had a draft you could eliminate a lot of that, but no one wants to bite the bullet for the good of the league. They want to keep their teams together for tournaments and to control all-stars.

Has anyone brought up that it's June and HS baseball is over?

But anybody can get lessons there. You don't have to be an elite player.
Another benefit is that they know a ton of coaches around the country. So if you are looking to play in college, he can find coaches who need players.
But anyway, I can understand a high school coach getting mad if a high school coach is giving good instruction and the private hitting coach is giving bad advice. But it is really just a case-by-case basis.
In my case, the hitting coach at the baseball academy is one of the best around, and the high school coach was an idiot.

but what high school?
It was years ago, but I never played a day of travel ball and made my high school team that played in the 4A state championship as a sophomore (my first year at the school).

The coach at the school I attended freshmen year was a fricking moron who nearly ruined my swing. Basically, he thought you needed stiff hips to keep your eyes still....

My travel ball playing cousin is about to get either paid out the arse or a full ride to a D-1 school of his choosing. But good on your nephew.
You're full of shite. No baseball recruit gets a full ride to the school of his choosing. Your travel ball playing cousin does have a better chance of having serious arm issues though.
And yes I played in college and never played one day of travel ball. I played whatever sport was in season until my junior year in high school. I played football and baseball only my last 2 years.

Yep, many of these kids also play football, which if they go deep in the playoffs will take them nearly to the Christmas break. I guess the coach would rather get a look at them fresh than beat down from a long football season.

He may get a legit 20% of a scholarship, though....

You also have the summer ball circuit to play.

Why is travel ball such a hot button issue? Most of the best athletes where I'm from started basketball/football mid summer but a few were still playing baseball. Is it some status symbol in the south to have your kid playing?
I'm actually interest to know if anyone can explain between the sarcasm and useless responses.

I technically had a full ride.... But I was also a little smart. I got an academic scholarship as well. Baseball paid for tuition and books, academic one paid for room/board and meal plan.
But yeh... No such thing as a full baseball ride. fricking Bregman didn't get a full ride. I know travel ball cousin ain't getting it.
I am coaching an 8u team this year. We have beat a few "travel" teams with some scrubs and a few kids with talent. I teach them how to play the game, hit off a tee and hold them accountable.
Travel ball kids are better right now, just from sheer reps. Once these kids get to be teenagers things average out unless the kid is a stud. In that case he does well regardless of playing travel or not. Just b/c you are paying for your kid to play at Disney and win a fricking ring doesn't mean shite and it doesn't mean they are learning the game.
Don't get me started on the pitching shite either....

I have.
And I haven't come across a college or high school coach who thought that highly of it. Most begrudgingly accept it as the status quo but almost all of them to a man say that kids know less and less about how to play the game. In short, they think they play too many games and spend far too little time in practice and understanding situations.
Have you gotten different feedback?

Travel ball parents don't care, they are the cross fitters of team sports.
