Rolex DJII. Fluted white gold bezel. It's a little more than your budget but worth the extra paper.

Don't worry about local service.
I send mine to a trusted watchmaker in PA. Express Mail and it's back in a couple of weeks.
I think Omega or Rolex and you can't go wrong!
Need to decide what style you like. New or vintage.

While I wouldn't get a Rolex right now if I were buying, I'd definitely recommend it for your first nice watch in that price range. Now, if you fall in love with some other watch, do that.
But be honest, having nice watches that even normal non-watch people know are nice has some novelty to it. Rolex is obviously king of that category, and is a classic heirloom watch. I got one when I graduated grad school, and while it won't be my favorite watch ever, it has a lot of meaning.
In that range, a sub or the explorer are probably doable. I think they just made the Explorer a little bigger, which is a good thing.

If you don't buy a Navitimer you made a mistake

iDk Ruzil. I paid $3k for my Sea-Dweller in 1997. It would sell for around $5500 today and a new one is over $8k. There are certainly worse ways to spend money.
idk achenator, Ole Tommy B is probably worth more than you and he took a $70 MM investment in 1985 and turned it into more than 1.2 Billion in 12 more years than it took you to make $2500.
He probably knows a little more than you about making money, even with his now declining mental faculties.

I intend to buy a Rolex one of these days. My grandfather had one that he bought in Paris near the end of WWII. I always one because of that.

Ironically, he seems to make the most sense to me. It might be very middle class of me, but I could come up with 6,000 better things to spend $6,000 on

Anyone who spends over 500 on a watch has their priorities messed up.. My fossil looks better than any other Rolex I've ever seen and it tells me the time just fine.

How does it compare to the explorer?
I think it'd be largely personal preference. I think the OP is probably more versatile in appearance and obviously is available in more options. The OP has taken over the Air King as the entry level Rolex, as I understand it. That's nothing to look down on, but it just explains why it is a much broader focus model vs the more narrow focus of the Explorer.
I would probably get the Explorer, but I already have a couple of watches in that Datejust/Air King/OP category, for lack of a better way to put it. The Explorer is a classic design with a strong history and is a Rolex I don't see that often. I think it's versatile watch (maybe not as much as the OP) and can be dressed up or down.
That is all largely true of the OP too, especially in light of the similar size. The older Air Kings were smaller, so the Explorer used to be a natural bump up in the lineup for size in addition to level. Not as true anymore.
You can't go wrong with a sub either. I've never made getting one a priority, but I might eventually.

Really makes no fricking sense. Get a killer couch or something instead.

My cousin used to work for Tom Benson at Pontchartrain bank. Whenever he would meet a new loan officer he would look at his wrist watch. If it was anything other than Timex, Bulova etc. he would give them a lecture on the future and present value of money.
Which is awfully presumptuous.
I always crack-up at the people in threads like this that rail on people for wanting to spend money on a nice watch.
A) Why do you care what others spend their money on?
B) A lot of times the watches are legacy pieces that can be handed down to a child, which is pretty cool...and what I plan on doing with mine.
C) See A.

This should be a concern once a decade for a modern watch, especially a tool watch.
I second the black bay black Tudor. It's a classic diving watch style with some crest accents. Hell you could get that AND a Nomos.
