brosnan Bond may not have been great but at least it felt like Bond. Craig was a great actor but his films, outside of CR, were joyless and hollow.

This.

Part of the joy of Bond was his campiness and womanizing.

This modern movement to rebel against that and make everything - Dark Knight so serious - and edgy...ruined the fun of Bond...gadgets, women, drinks, and also a tough S.O.B.

Bond isn't Bond just being another action hero ala Jason Bourne-motif. What's so interesting about that?

Craig (probably doing what he was told) - changed and ruined Bond. (And I read all the books and yes Bond was a brooding alcoholic) but we grew up on the movies and in them Bond was a playboy while also being tough. I liked two of Craigs films but they never felt like Bond. Just another guy.

they're in a difficult position because so many of the original actors are gone - Desmond llewyln, lois maxwell, bernard maxwell - but they keep trying and failing to push the new bonds into 'deep territory' that its untenable. What they need is a normal formula of Bond movie, with a little edge. If they try and follow up on Spectre they are fricked.

Everyone saying he is an idiot for turning down the money, that may be true but he is already rich. Not like anyone in this thread turning down 100 million to go back to 40-80k jobs.

I think he's stupid to turn down that much because it's not like he's collecting the money for doing his own stunts. He can make that same bank and have the production company spend a little extra for a few stuntmen.

However, after all but giving his performance in Spectre via Video Skype, I think it was even more stupid to offer him that much in the first place. Hiddleston, Fassbender, Elba or Jonah Hill will do it for a fifth to a quarter of the price and the movies will still make bank off the name.

He won't make 99 million for his next couple of films, but he may make 35-50 million which is still a nice chunk of change. He wanted to go in a different direction so props.

That's walking away from a lot of money, but I'm glad he is moving on to something else. I really enjoy most of his recent movies and think he's a pretty damn good actor, but I would like to see more from him to see how good he really is.

He's proven he can be a lead. The girl with the dragon tatto was wonderful, I thought, and layer cake may be one of my favorite British gangster movies. Of course his bond movies...

He also can play a good supporting/side role. Hell, his character in the jacket was maybe the best part of what was an otherwise mediocre movie. He also fit in well in Munich (what an awesome movie btw. Several scenes that just stick with you for some reason).

Yeah, he did Cowboys and Aliens, we all make mistakes

I just hate seeing potentially good actors lock themselves into one series of movies and play the same role and possibly miss out on taking roles that will challenge them and possibly bring out their best.

love how these actors get "tired" of a character. i remember pierce brosnan fighting to get out of his contract with the remington steele people so he could play bond.... then whining that he didn't want to be type cast.

Craig was on the Nerdiest podcast awhile back and basically said that Bond movies take up a full year and really limit the time he can spend with his family. He sounded pretty over it then. Its a pretty good interview if want to kill an hour.

He has got plenty of money and i can sympathize with someone doing a job that they aren't in love with (clearly i cannot afford to quit like he can).

Liked Craig the most as Bond. Don't really know if it was just him or how his Bond was developed by writing and direction. Crazy to turn down that much cash.

They should get Fassbender, but it won't happen. Anyone who has not watched The Night Manager should do so because Hiddleston is basically auditioning as bond in that series. He's not as trained as Bond, but he's solid in that roll...not near as good as Fassbender would have been, he just doesn't give off enough of a badass vibe.

He'll be on the 2nd tier of Bond actors with Lazenby and Brosnon. Not Craig or Connery, but just below.

So we can get Idris Elba now? Dude would totally reinvigorate the franchise.

I enjoyed Craig because I thought he brought a credible physicality to the role that no other Bond matched. Connery was probably the consensus best overall but Craig was the most suited to be a modern action lead.

Please no. Just no. The campiness was unbearable in films like Moonraker, Die Another Day, etc. I do not want that Bond to return. Ever.

If you haven't seen Layer Cake, it's his best film. Pretty sure Guy Ritchie directed it and Sienna Miller never looked better than in that film. Craig also did a badass animated film called Renaissance, the man is a good actor. The Bond stuff is too formulaic, nothing wrong with branching out and he is already loaded with money.

Turns Down $99 Million

I hate any a-hole that is willing to do this. You can never have enough financial security. Just 10 of that 99 million would set me up for life and I could live a good middle class lifestyle without working anymore significant hours for the rest of my life.

nah, Matthew Vaughn. he's worked with guy ritchie before, though, and layer cake definitely has similar vibes in a lot of scenes

bookmakers around the world no longer accepting bets on whether Tom Hiddleston will succeed Craig as 007.

I didn't even realize this was a thing. Would it be illegal for the person responsible for making this decision leaking it to a friend who goes on to bet the house on whoever the casting-guy tipped him off on?

the limits on prop bets like these are very small, probably about $500. the amount of action the book takes in from everyone else would more than compensate for the one guy that max bets it because he knows the outcome.

What the article doesn't mention is that Craig made somewhere between $60-75mil for Spectre and Skyfall after all is said and done. Another $100mil and potentially $175mil is a shite load of money, but he's already set for life. At almost 50 years old, committing 4-5 more years to a project he doesn't enjoy any more obviously isn't worth it to him. I can't fault him for that.
