Planning on switching (with Verizon) from iPhone to a flip phone. Verizon offers a plan that is $30/month with unlimited talk, text, and data. I looked online and it looks like I can still use uber through the web browser on the flip phone and respond to group messages. Anybody have any other recommendations/warnings about switching leaving behind the iOS ecosystem/smartphone? Switching from 5S to Kyocera DuraXV.

Did anybody make an it-doesn't-get-dumber-than-iPhone joke yet?

What is your reason for wanting to switch from a smartphone?

If all you do is make and receive calls, then you can do without a smartphone. I just got my first smartphone in November last year. I'm retired and at my computer most of the day. But I am enjoying my LG G4.

Pretty much this. I'd miss Waze but people got by without GPS back in the day. Somehow.

But the inability to watch porn on my phone at the office would get old very quickly.

Yeah, but the OP mentions using the Uber website which makes it sound like he really should get a smartphone. What kind of browsers do today's flip phone's have? Are they up to date and the only problem would be screen size and using a number pad to navigate, or is this basically a 5 year old phone technologically speaking and Uber's website might not even work properly with it?

If the OP's budget for a phone is this tight he should probably look at a cheaper carrier like Cricket and get a low end Android smartphone.

Why are you switching to a dumb phone if you still plan on using web browing and uber? It's not going to work properly and annoy the shite out of you.

If you're gonna go dumb phone go dumb all the way. Call, text, & play snake. Thats all you need.

You'd think they'd offer a plan without data for smartphones. I know my parents would switch to it and keep their iphones. They only use the data when they are on wifi anyway

This was the reason for my question. I wonder what his motive is for the switch yet still want to use Uber.

I don't plan on using the web browser for anything really. I don't Uber very often, but I just looked to make sure it was a possibility. Got a smartphone through work, so I really have no need to spend $100/month so I can use snapchat/look at instagram. Really, my reason for switching is to save a bit of money and to see if I can live without the crutch for a while. I feel I am wasting too much time on it, would rather just not have the temptation to stare at the phone in public all the time.

Why in the hell are you spending $100/month? You could be paying less than half that.

Turn mobile data off. Or, alternatively, use a little self-control and resist the temptation.

What it really comes down to is

A) keeping your current phone, but buy the cheapest plan. Presumably, this plan will severely cap data which shouldn't be a problem

B) get your non smartphone with associated plan.

I'm not too sure that the gimped plan for your smartphone will be that much cheaper than your "dumbphone" plan. Price them out.

Try over the phone. It sucks, but I've gotten good deals that way.
