Where are you working? I live in the very "back" of The Woodlands. Not congested at all (for the most part). There is no place I've been to that I'd rather live in the Houston area. But, if I had to drive downtown, or kept 8-5 hours, I might think differently. I can go in to work for 7 and leave at 3:30, so I miss traffic. I can work most days 20 minutes from my house and only head down into the energy corridor twice a week.
As far as nice to live, I'm 10 minutes from nice restaurants, shopping, concerts, etc.. But at the same time feel like I'm completely out of the Houston mess. I have a park within walking distance with nice tennis courts, basketball, splash pad for my toddler, pavilion, swings, open fields etc.. I can go for a 10 mile run and never have to run on the road, and never run the same place twice. I've got deer in my front yard some mornings, etc.. People say schools in Houston are all good, and that's not necessarily the case, but you pretty much have nothing to worry about in The Woodlands. My wife works in The Woodlands and can go a month without ever leaving. It's its own place with a lot to offer.
Plus, housing is cheaper than it's been in a while. 5 houses for sale around me. Which has me worried if I were to be laid off and had to sell, but I still can't complain about where I live.

So many questions to answer.
Do you have school aged children? If so, Klein, Tomball, and the Woodlands (Conroe) ISD's are your best bet. Avoid Spring ISD.
Taxes: I believe the Woodlands tax rates are significantly higher than any surrounding areas-check that out before purchasing a home if that is hot button of you. Some here consider that the outskirts.
There a ton of new neighborhoods in north Harris County with varying price ranges. Maybe rent for a year before you determine where you want to buy and study which school district you'll want to live in.
The north side of Harris County (Spring, Klein) and the Woodlands will give you quick access to the new Grand Parkway (99), I-45 (usually a disaster), and Hardy Toll Road. That will provide easy access to the areas you mentioned.
We've lived in north Harris County for 25 years and it's a great place to raise a family. Good luck.

This is true. However, if you are looking for one of the "super neighborhoods" that are so common here, you do get to factor in that there are no HOA fees in The Woodlands. It is it's own "township" and those are factored into your property taxes. And they actually use them to keep everything up. Not saying that doesn't happen in other Houston neighborhoods, but it didn't where I lived in LA.

I've actually had to dive behind a car for a shooting across the street from me in Gunspoint. It's adequately named.

I stayed in South Spring for about 4 months while working on the Costco in humble. Greenspoint was the first place I've felt was sketchy since I moved from Nola.

The Woodlands is nice. It's a bit congested for my liking, I'd prefer to be on the outskirts. Suggestions?
I suggest CAREFUL selection of area. Outskirts of Woodlands can go from "zero to meth labs" in a damned hurry.
Understand that pockets of Montgomery County are as white trash as anything anyone has or can ever experience. The term "Da Parrish" is used here quiet a bit. Wherever that area is, parts of Montgomery Co are every bit that bad.

You go to school around Klein? I went to KHS. That area is completely changed in the last 10 years. Used to still be a suburb when we were there.

I suggest this to everybody. It gives you a full year to watch the news. See where all the shootings and shite happen. Also, gives you time to drive through some places at night.
Spring was voted against. I second that. Spring is too close to NW Houston. Hell I don't know where one starts and the other begins. NW side is very Crack-tastic. Getting gas on the NW beltway after dark, you better have your Spidey senses working.
