I'm lucky that my hours are VERY flexible. Most of the time my commute is 25 minutes. But 2-3 days a week, it's going to be an hour. But I can leave at 3 (earlier somtimes). For the amenities for my son, the ability for me to go run, the access to roads to ride my bike from the house, etc. I'm perfectly fine spending that time in a car. Hell, I lived less than 10 miles from my house in semi small town Louisiana and it took me 30 minutes to get home with traffic some days.

As far as schools and interaction and networking, I can get that here as well. For the money I save not living in West U, I can send my kids to pretty great private schools here.
