Question about cremation

A close friend of mine (good guy) passed away the other day, and I went to his memorial service yesterday. Since he had been sick for a while and knew what was coming, he had already taken care of his arrangements and chose to be cremated. At the service, his sister and her two grown children were telling anyone who would listen that "he was going to hell" for being cremated. It really pissed me off and I wanted to say something, but I bit my tongue and resisted the urge so as to not make even more of a scene. I feel a believer's salvation is between him and God. I must admit I have never heard of the idea that cremation would send someone to hell. Has anyone else heard of this belief or had a similar experience?

I figured you'd have the answers to this question.

They should go to church. The Catholic church has allowed cremation for several years now.

The Bible neither favors nor forbids the process of cremation. Nevertheless, many Christians believe that their bodies would be ineligible for resurrection if they are cremated. This argument, though, is refuted by others on the basis of the fact that the body still decomposes over time after burial.

I believe it was not recognized by the Catholic church until 1963 and even now it is not the preferred method in the eyes of the church.

I've heard that being creamated sends you straight to hell. But I know I'm going to hell either way, figured I might as well let them burn my body since my soul will be burning for all eternity anyway.

I really don't give a shite what your friend's family said about his cremation but sorry for your loss.
But on a sidenote, I'd heard that funeral homes were telling families that the law required embalming for all bodies whether buried or cremated. That kinda pissed me off so I did some research and it's totally not true (the law part, not sure what funeral homes may lie about).
No bodies require embalming according to Louisiana law (RS37:848), they only require embalming OR refrigeration if they aren't buried or cremated in 30 hours. And nearly every morgue has the ability to refrigerate a body.
So if a funeral home tries to take advantage of your weakened state and hose you for an embalming fee, tell them to go to hell. frick those vultures.
ETA I changed leeches to vultures because it seemed more appropriate.

I think the current teaching of the Catholic Church allows for cremation, but you have to keep the ashes all in one place. I'm sure that will change soon too.

People are stupid. Why in the frick would they think he is going to hell for being cremated.
I want to be cremated only because I think funeral homes rip off the grieving family with astronomically priced coffins and other crap. They can put me in a coffee can like Donnie on The Big Lebowski.

You should have told them that there is no heaven or hell.

they're pretty f'd up to presume to speak for the Creator Himself.
they're LOST and don't even know it...

Very few things piss me off more than jackasses feeling the need to shite on the wishes of someone who's died. Happened with me in regards to cremation 14 years ago this month when my dad died. For years and years he had told me and my sisters what he wanted whenever he died...to be cremated and have his ashes scattered near this little fishing hole we used to go to and have such a good time at. I mean...not what I'd have wanted if it were me, but there's zero question it was what he wanted.
So...time comes and he dies and we have his body cremated. Next thing you know, his long time girlfriend (like 20+ years long...they got together after my mom died when I was really young) decides she needs to step in and tell us what we ought to be doing. Within a week or so it's nearly her entirely family hounding me, even so far as doing it at the memorial service I acquiesced to even though he said he hadn't wanted one. I actually had her brother in law tell me, "You know...we do these things for the living not the dead." The irony is that they're all religious...so in their minds he could literally see them fricking with me AND the plans he had wanted me to carry out and they gave zero fricks. And I, who was under no impression that he existed outside my own memories, was more concerned with doing what he wanted.
Seriously...frick people like that. The greatest thing you can do, I think, is honor your friend/family member by granting their last wish regardless of whether or not they'll ever know if you did or not.

I've made my wishes clear.
When I die, cremate me, find the finest woman that is willing or can be bought, mix my ashes with water in a douche bottle, and run me through one more time.

Baptist theologian Albert Mohler doesn't say people are going to hell for it, but he does call it a pagan practice and a loosening of traditional Christian ties. LINK It wouldn't surprise me that the hardcore fundamentlists would take an even harsher stand. I've heard some Catholic leaders speak against it also.

That's crazier than anything those Muslims believe, IMO.

Ahsman to ashman. Dustman to dustman.
They do chop you up before they burn you with the leftovers bits from others.
But whatever.

I donno. I want to be shot out of a circus cannon or parachute with a bag of silverwear or rocket skates. Keep em guessing afterwards.

I hate when people do things like this.
Had an atheist friend tell me this mess. (Like, you're atheist, so what's it to you?!)
Your body isn't any good in Heaven anyways.

Your friend was brave. Hope he's enjoying life in Heaven.
