Start with short and easy-to-read books and work your way up-
"Great Arkansans" is actually the world's shortest book.
It has -838,324 pages.
Then there's "Aggies Who Are Normal", that's only three pages long. The biography of the author ran long.
"Alabama: The Land of Preacher/Politicians"
It's an adult-themed coloring book.
As they say in Starkville: Good luck on the reading!

"The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich" by William Shirer is not for you, then.

Something by Donald Goines. Like Dope Fiend or Whoreson for starters.

War and Peace
Apparently Tolstoy's mistress didn't like the title and insisted he change it.

Read some of the Jack Reacher stuff by Lee Childs. One of the Jack Reacher movies was just filmed in LA so you can catch a local vibe possibly.
In the books, JR is 6'6". In the movies he is played by Tom Cruise so I am unsure how some of the stories/fight scenes can happen.

It is.... If it's not a dark and honestly foreboding examination of the human frailty (mental, emotional) you will never see the light, and only then it flicker for a moment, vanishes and gone.. (apologies for using the last line out of context -Lou Reed Romeo & Juliet, NY NY)
Anything by Vonnegut is less taxing on the mind, more enjoyable and equally enlightening relative to the other suggestions. Anything by Bukowski is like a long night of drinking with loose wimmins and lustful dirty old men...It's Great!!
