If Smylie makes that putt on one it may have been a different day, he also missed a close one on 5, then the wheels came off.

I agree. It would've been incredibly difficult for Smylie to win, but you're right, if he drains the putt on 1 and then on 5, he settles down, gains some confidence, and who knows.

When those early putts didn't drop, you could see the energy drain from his body, and we all knew what was coming.

But a tremendous week for him.

Spieth. Defending champion, previous 2nd place who quad bogies a Par 3 vs a virtual unknown in the final pairing in his first Masters.

I know Smylie personally and he is a great guy who I hope and think will have continued success, but what happened yesterday was not at all shocking. He has less than 20 career events under his belt, and he was in the final group of the most prestigious tournament in the world playing with the defending champion. Him shooting anything less than 80 you could argue would be more shocking

What Speith did on the other hand is mind blowing to me. It's not like he just couldn't get a putt to fall to where he couldn't close the tournament out. He missed a short iron on a par 3 by 30 yards and then just flubbed a wedge like an armature that barely got to the water. The defending champion who already has 2 major victories gave up a five shot lead with less than 9 to play. Thats shocking not some kid that half of this board hadn't heard of before Saturday not being able to close out his first career major.

a quadruple bogey is about as big a choke as you can imagine especially with 7 holes to play and a huge lead. Shooting a 79 is not rare.

How is this a debate? Spieth was in complete control, that was totally unexpected. Smylie was playing on the biggest stage of his career in the final group with the defending champ. It would have been more surprising if he didn't struggle.

Spieth's tee shot at 12 was foolish. He should have been aiming 20 feet left of the pin. It's his third shot chunk into the water that was maybe the worst pure choke in major golf history.

Bro Spieth...Smylie got nothun to prove, didn't have a shot in the dark to win. He's good but doesn't have enough experience and nerve control yet to win on Sunday's. Smh

I would say Speith. That was really bad on #12. Did anyone see that coming?

As for Smylie, I love to see LSU players do well so I was pulling for him. Not too surprised that his round went that way. Hoping he learns the most from his experience and goes on to a lot of tour wins.

Speith.

The only thing Speith can take out of this weekend is that he has already won the Masters, so he doesn't have to deal with the "Greg Norman collapse" questions about why he can't win there.

But that third shot on 12 was so shocking. Perhaps the most shocking golf shot blow up I have ever seen. At the turn, he really looked like he was about to put the hammer down like the stone cold machine we saw last year.

Spieth's melt will go down as one of the most shocking moments in golf history, so it's easily him.

The only thing shocking about Smylie is how bad he blew up. Most people were expecting a blow up, but something more in the 77-78 range.

the legendary bobby jones, arguably the greatest golfer of all times wrote about the pressure surrounding major tournaments, esp the Masters. he couldn't eat, he couldn't sleep, he couldn't relax at all. it was like ulcer producing. golf is a differnet sport in that it is individual and very mental and emotional. smylie kaufman did a hell of a job even if he succumbed to the pressure the last day. he's not alone. bobby jones succumbed to it sometimes too. learning how to deal with that takes years and probably professional help also. I love the guy and look forward to following his career.

Competitive golf at that level is mostly mental. Those guys know how to swing a golf club and make the ball do almost anything they want in practice. But in a tournament it is you vs. the ball vs. the course. You have to battle all three of those things 65+ times during a round all while in between walking to the next battle with nothing but your thoughts.

Spieth by a long shot. It's not even that Spieth lost it's how he lost. If you would have told me Jordan Spieth would hacker chunk two balls in the water and shoot a 7 on a Par 3 I would have laughed in your face. It's just not likely for something like that to happen to a player of that caliber. I expected Smylie to have a bad round just because it's a high pressure situation. You're paired with arguably the best golfer on the planet in the final round of the Masters and it's his first time in a situation like that. The guy played great golf and just folded under the pressure of the moment and that is completely acceptable in the situation he was in. He'll be a good tour player I believe and win some tournaments in the future though. I don't see multiple majors or anything but maybe one later down the road.

Smylie just had a bad day on a tough course. No one other than his immediate family and LSU fans even noticed.

The defending Masters champion led the whole way until he went into the water TWICE, and gave reason to consider whether his or Van De Velde's was the worst judgement in major golfing history.

Are you freaking serious? Smylie is a nobody, at least at this point. The odds were he would fold like a cheap suit under the pressure of being in the final pairing at the Masters on a Sunday.

Spieth had already been in this position the last two years. His collapse was totally unexpected.

Ditto. You drill that shot at 12 into the back left bunker to eliminate any doubt with the water. One of the most bone-headed shots in Masters history. Dude was fighting his swing all day and he chooses to throw caution to the wind on the trickiest hole on the back???? Reap what u sow. He got greedy and it bit him hard.
