Have eaten both the Freddy's and Cowboy Chicken on Siegen this week...review

Went to Cowboy Chicken on Friday evening. Walked in and placed order at 7:42 according to my receipt. They were busy, as expected, being a Friday night and a new place. Placed order to go. 1/2 chicken with twice baked potatoes and baked mac and cheese, and sweet tea. At 8:27 I received my food. Should have called it in, but the fact that families who came in after me ordered food, ate, and left before I got mine had me a bit disappointed. They came out and asked my name and brought me a receipt that credited my card back. I didn't ask for it, so at least they were trying to keep me happy. There were 5-6 of us in the same boat. Anyway, to the food....the chicken had a great flavor. Skin was crispy. Meat was maybe a tad overdone. It wasn't dry really, but it was on the verge of being on too long. Wood flavor stood out in the meat. Not smokey, but wood. It's wood fired, after all. The tea was meh. I like sweet tea. Like actual sweet tea. Not semi sweet tea. 2 cups to the gallon sweet. This was 1-1 1/2 it seemed. Whatever. Not a big deal. The twice baked potatoes.....one of their signature dishes....will never even consider ordering again. The flavor wasn't all that bad on them. It was a texture thing, and I'm not usually a texture kinda guy. They were basically thin potato strips (like coffee stirrer size) mixed up with whatever they mixed it with. It was like eating firm hashbrowns. I fully expected twice baked potatoes to be like mashed potatoes consistency. Surprise! The Mac and cheese...also meh. I guess I'd get it again, but it reminded me of Piccadilly....which some folks love, so who knows. All in all, I will go back. The chicken is worth it to me. I will be getting different sides next time. They say the fried okra is killer.
Oh yeah.....also had the peach cobbler. Pretty tasty. Kinda tasted like every other 1/1/1 cobbler I've ever had though, so don't expect something groundbreaking unless you're used to the store bought crap with the pie crusts.
To Freddy's....had originally gone there on Friday for lunch. Opened the door, saw about 20 people in line and walked out. Went back this evening. Much easier. Had the double patty melt, order of fries, and a vanilla malt. The patty melt was pretty good for basically a fast food burger place. The fries are very thin cut. Very thin. Like the size of the fries that come in the can. Wasn't my favorite part of the meal. The frozen vanilla custard malt was very good. Ended up spending around $10 on the meal. Not bad, but for basically the same price I can go across the street to mooyah and get what I think is a better burger and fries. I'll go back, but probably just to get the frozen custard. I'll do mooyah or burgersmith for burgers.

Sorry. None. I didn't even think to do this till I was laying down reading the board. Didn't plan out on doing a review. Just remembered all the talk about them opening before long. Well, they are open!

I went to Cowboy Chicken last week. Got a quarter chicken (white meat), mac and cheese, green beans and a drink. It was over $10. Chicken was fine (although the wing was burned) and the sides were good. But man, it didn't seem like a good deal for the money. I used to go to Matherene's on Bluebonnet for their plate lunches and those were better. (And a couple of bucks less)

yeah its pretty crazy how expensive they've gotten considering the fact that for $5-6 you can buy a whole damn good rotisserie chicken at the store.

You made everything sound like shite, then said you'd go back.

Eh. Maybe so. I said the chicken was good enough to go back for. The sides I wasn't impressed with. The wait was bad, but I also said there were possibly underlying reasons for, and they tried to make it good. I'd go back to Freddy's for the frozen custard if nothing else. If I'm just going on the burger, I'd go to mooyah, although I said the burger was good for a fast food burger. Was just trying to relay the total experience and everything I tried, and whether or not I'd try it again. I don't get to casually drive by and eat at the places most of the time. I'm stuck close by at work, and eat a few meals a day. You kinda get tired of canes, McDonald's, etc. So maybe I am a little more forgiving.

It was a good review. I just thought it was funny that at the end, you said you'd go back.

We ate at Cowboy Chicken this past Friday as well, probably got there an hour before you did.
To their credit, they did have a person walking the floor to inquire about quality of food. The restaurant is large, has a lot of open space, nicely appointed and people kept coming in. By the time we left, the line was approaching the main entrance door.
Unfortunately, we found the chicken to be rather small (a normal 1/2 chicken was about the size of 1/4 chicken you would find at Sam's or Costco) and the white meat pieces were exceptionally dry. The chicken wing of the bird could have passed for chicken jerky. As far as flavor was concerned, no complaints there. It tasted like rotisserie chicken.
The sides that we had were marginal at best. Macaroni and Cheese were "dry" - don't see the resemblance to Piccadilly here. Twice baked potatoes had more of a consistency of grits than potatoes. Texture was just "off." And the Fried Okra was frozen. Doesn't take too long to fry up okra, however this may be a corporate decision and taken out of the hands of franchisee?
Despite my critique, I hope the owners do exceptionally well. It's a great alternative to how we normally get chicken (fried) and pricing is fair for a quick service restaurant.

I've been twice now and enjoyed it both times. Both were during the lunch rush, but service wasn't terribly slow despite being pretty busy. The chicken is the star of the show, but both the black beans and pinto beans were good. My boys love rice, so the spanish rice was a constant both times. The fried okra was OK, but it was your standard fare and the portion was pretty small. That said, the peach cobbler was really good and I think the value for my family was good.
1 - whole chicken
1- side of black beans
1- side of spanish rice
1- side of fried okra
2- teas
1- family sized cobbler
___
$30.xx
The only snafu was they brought me a very small cobbler out instead of the large sized. I brought it up, they told me to keep it and brought the additional family sized.

We went Friday and tried the quarter chicken and chicken sandwich. Both were good. The black beans were crap, the Mac n cheese tasted like it was cooked at Piccadilly that morning and warmed up. The fries were good but some weren't done enough. And the tea was garbage. I liked the chicken but not enough to run back. My wife didn't care for it as a whole so I'm not sure if we would go back at all. It's just a weird menu that specializes in one thing and isn't a value really to make it special.

I went to Freddy's a week ago. Loved it. Got the double burger, fries, and a concrete.
The burger was the thin crispy patties. Reminded me of Culvers up north. Fries were thin and crispy. Custard was excellent. For essentially the cost of a large Big Mac meal, I was very happy.

It's easily the best fast food burger out there, IMO.

I get cravings for flat crispy burgers like that, and those pickles are legit. Might have to try Freddy's.

I agree, Cowboy Chicken was pretty meh. The chicken itself was alright, but the sides were nothing special. The best thing I had was probably the creamed spinach. Doubt I'll return.
I really enjoyed my meal at Freddy's, though. I had the California-style burger and a "Hawaiian" concrete w/ no coconut, add banana. Good stuff.

Tried Freddie's Saturday night. Long line, but moved fairly well and did not wait long for food. Ordered a concrete and my son got a sundae. They timed it well in that the burgers were served about 10 minutes before the desserts.
Burgers were damned good. Better than Steak and Shake, but definitely more expensive. Fries were similar in size to Durkee potato sticks, but actually tasted like fries.
Frozen desserts were great. That custard is smooth as hell and very tasty. Also, very filling.
Counter service was very friendly and competent. Kept on top of tables (seating is at a premium).
Will absolutely go back...often.

And mustard as the only condiment and two huge pickles. It's like the exact opposite of what I consider a good burger. Fries look decent, though. Thanks for the head's up.

Well what, exactly, do you consider a 'good' burger? You can get whatever toppings you like.
Mine looked like this, and was tip-top.

I figured. However, I looked at their menu and saw that was their standard burger, and it seemed so foreign to me. As long as the "thin and crispy" patties aren't overly charred and tough, I'd definitely eat that burger you depicted. Looks pretty tasty, actually.
