And also, I'm not exactly rounding up a posse and holding a news conference or anything. But Dearman's was really one of the only reasons I had to go there. It's not like I'd be driving across town to go to that shitty stationary store over there anyway.

How much business do you do with the other businesses in the center?

Oh give me a break. I am seeing this Dearman's shite all over social media today, and quite frankly, I am bored with the whole "LET'S SAVE THE BUSINESS!" lynch mob that people try to pull every time a "nostalgic" restaurant closes. Restaurants have been opening and closing as long as they've been around. Is it sad? Sure. But it's life.

Highland Coffee.. Chelseas's.. Dearman's.. let it go, people. These idiots on Facebook are already planning some huge uproar and absolutely cutting into the building owner for something they know zero about.

EDIT: And like someone else pointed out, it sounds like the landlord and Dearman's were having issues already. It clearly states that this has been an issue since October. Unless you know some facts we don't, Dearman's could have very well been giving the landlord trouble in some way. Sounds to me like the landlord was trying to be classy and diplomatic and not trash talk the tenant that everyone loves.

Caterie repeat. Outside of an occasional pint of chicken salad, I don't shop there anyway. Calvin's is overpriced to keep out the riff-raff, works on me. After 3 excellent visits to Beausoleil, I had 3 very pedestrian visits, not worth the price.

The traffic is the area is brutal, so I avoid it.

I don't think it's an emotional reaction. I think it's pretty calculated, and a completely reasonable way to direct my displeasure with the actions of a landlord so as to pressure them into changing their policy

Its emotional and irrational.

You are going to boycott businesses in that area, all of which had nothing to do with the situation, because Dearmans lease is getting terminated? Nothing about that is calculated.

quote:

You might have the right to terminate a lease for any reason, but it's kind of a service to the public to talk about why you're doing it.

The public doesnt have a right to know. Its stated in articles that the owner can terminate the lease in the event of a fire. A fire happened and lease is terminated. If there is a beef between Dearmans owner and the landlord, thats strictly none of our business, especially if everything has happened legally.

If the owner came out and said he has another tenant lined up that is willing to pay more, would that be ok with you?

quote:

Therefore you keep all your other tenants happy and without fear their business won't be hurt with the hastiness of your actions.

Who is to say the other tenants arent happy?

What can hurt their businesses though are customers who boycott their stores because of hasty emotional decisions that have nothing to do with them.

Maybe they don't give a frick about your business because the tenant is paying his rent no matter if you buy a $5 hamburger or not.

Remember when Hank Saurage just up and decided it was time to throw Highland Coffee's out of the building he just purchased for no reason? And it looked a little shady that the grandson of a local coffee magnate (whom also has a seat on the board of directors of said coffee magnate) could just do something because it made business sense, but took little to no stock in how it would publicly look?

I dont know this situation but you specifically say 'because it made business sense'. How dare people do things that make business sense.

If those companies want to keep my business, they should urge the building owner to renew Dearman's lease.

So those companies, who you never gave business to anyway, are going to lose your business?

Are you even reading what you are posting or just irrationally typing the diarrhea flowing through your head?

You expect a business in there to go to the landlord and urge them to renew the lease? Wow. Yea let me go ruin my friendship with the landlord to help out some other business I dont have any ties to. Smart

quote:

Otherwise look like they're engaging in business with an a-hole and they risk looking like they support the decision. If that's the way they want to go about it, then deal with the consequences.

The consequence of having a non customer of theirs like you never go to their store?

My guess is that most of the people kicking up their heels with this boycott movement rarely, if ever, gave business to the to the other stores in that area, so there will be no loss to them to speak of.

I really hate to see the place go. I enjoy going there from time to time, but I'm far from a regular. Probably haven't been in nearly a year, actually. I also have no idea of the whole story and it would be intelligent of others to find out before freaking out and inciting others. The boycott thing is juvenile and unfair to the other businesses although I honestly don't think a lot of Dearman's clientele shopped at any of the other businesses. I suspect that percentage is small. It won't work.

Agree.

But I'm not surprised by idiots like this anymore. What makes it worse are the other people with this group think mentality like the Facebook reference earlier

I asked you earlier how much business you give to the other businesses there, but you never answered, so I'm asking again. How much business do you regularly do with the other businesses in that center? $100? $1000? $5000? Who is going to suffer from your boycott and by how much?

You sound like a fool.

Let's make 40 business owners suffer to prove a point to one property owner. Sound logic.

Ok, let's see... I go to Portabello's for brunch every other month or so. Sometimes my wife and I meet up at the La Madeline for lunch. I used to bring the kids up to TCBY every now and then. It's not like it's gonna hurt anybody all that much. And I'm not gonna go around putting fliers up or sharpening the pitchfork or anything. I just think it's a shitty thing to do to these guys and it will put a sour taste in my mouth for that area. I made an argument earlier and I'm sure I could spit shite out defending it until I'm blue in the face, but I don't have enough passion to debate it. The entire complex is seated in the heart of terrible drivers in a small parking lot full of mostly boutique businesses I don't give a shite about.

There was really one reason I went over there all that much and it was Dearman's. I surmise it's the reason a lot of people went over there. It's not like I'm calling up a news crew about it. I just won't really want to go over there anymore.

It's fair not to go there anymore since Dearman's was your main reason for going there. I agree with you that most of the folks who went to Dearman's probably didn't go to any of the other businesses. That's why all the hurt over Dearman's isn't going to amount to much as far as the landlord is concerned. All of this will be heated for a few days and then it will be forgotten.

One thing I don't understand is how you are so certain that there's not more to this story than what's in the article and especially since the article indicates this was discussed back in October, anyway. In my mind, Dearman's should have already been looking for new digs at that time with the possibility that the lease was not going to be renewed in June.
