Travel baseball vs. Rec league/school ball (for kids 12 and under)

Putting your son/daughter under the age of 12 on a "travel ball" team doesn't make much sense to me. Seems like parents are too quick to jump the gun on their kids being the next Cal Ripken. You can't pay your way to a college baseball/softball scholarship. Either your kid has talent and heart, or they don't. Wait until they are in 8th or 9th grade and then maybe consider it - IF they are good.
Rant over.

If you're not in travel ball by age 6, you can kiss the majors goodbye

Well, don't put your kid on a travel ball team.

Your kid is either good enough for the show or isn't. The idea that a travel coach will be the difference for high school, college, or the pros is laughable at best.

This isn't a "what curfew should you give a teenager" type debate.
Travel ball is factually a money maker for some that sucks in parents into thinking this is the only way little Johnny can compete on a proper level.
Playing ball in four years of high school would more than qualify your child to make college or even a pro contract.
Bottom line, if you're good, you're good.
No need to ruin it for the little ones. In fact, shoving baseball down their throats disallows the young child's development into other more worthy areas or skills.

Damn near the same can be said for basketball too

I've always been partial to Dixie ball/little league. But that was when travel ball wasn't very big for kids. Now, we played travel ball every now and then but not a whole lot. Dixie Ball in Bossier around 2000-2007 was extremely competitive. More competitive than travel ball.
In high school I played travel ball in the summer.
I just don't see how spending thousands of dollars on that shite is gonna help a kid become Willie Mays. It's kinda fricking ridiculous if you ask me.

So don't let your kids play travel ball. Then you have nothing to worry about.

sorry your kids aren't good enough for travel ball

Travel ball parents are over the top out of control. Let the kid play different sports, try different things. Travel ball traps them into one sport too young.
But, I will say this...
Rec league coaching is god-awful. At least where my kids play, the coaching is embarrassingly bad. Look, I coach myself. I try to learn drills to teach the kids, etc. But many rec leagues are so desperate for coaches they will take anyone who signs up. Including adults who are not at all dependable and have no desire to actually coach the kids, but are basically forced into doing it so the league can actually play. And worse, the rec dept makes no attempt to hold coaching clinics, provide videos, etc. There are no fundamentals being taught to most kids.
With a travel ball team you are going to have one of two coaches:
1) The coach who's kid is on the team, and the kid and his friends are treated differently than the others. This type of coach is no different than rec league.
2) The coach who doesn't have a kid on the team and just enjoys helping the kids develop and learn. This is the best kind of coach out there.

While not disagreeing with your entire post, I do disagree with this:
There are probably 4 or 5 options, and not just two. Most notably is the guy who makes a living with these teams/organizations.

One of my son's coaches tried to recruit him to a select team.
$1,900 a yr, you buy your uniform and pay for all travel expenses.
63 games a season
I said F##K that

The extra practice and typically higher quality instruction creates a HUGE gap between travel ball kids and normal rec league players by the time they are in 8/9th grade.
Travel ball at such a young age is stupid. Unfortunately, you can't play catchup even to play in HS unless you are an elite talent. It has ruined the multisport diverse athlete
