His troops were accused of no war crimes and he tried to kill Hitler. And the Desert Fox is a badass nickname.

He didn't try to kill Hitler, he may have known about the plot and possibly most of the conspirators but wasn't actively involved in it.

Not sure that he was a Nazi at all, don't really recall him being in the party.

He was a professional soldier. Didn't join the party and wasn't SS.

Damned fine general and overall a good man.

Mighty neighborly of Hitler not to send in the tanks when Rommel wanted them on D Day. Allies may have been pushed back into the sea.

But he was human. El Alamin happened and he overextended his supply.

I have no idea how he couldn't beat the Brits who were running around north africa in their little rolled up hot pants. The Brits Africa campaign uniform is so bad it's the GOAT.
