The absurdity of ridding TOPS without first tightening the requirements first is something I cannot comprehend. I know I have a vested interest in it continuing, but come on.
I completely agree with that.
My original premise in my post still stands - there are not thousands of students like you in Louisiana schools.
You're an elite student, you'll get aid regardless of TOPS.

So am I understanding that a student only needs a 20 on his ACT and 3 B's and 2 C's in his core classes each year in high school and he will get the entry level TOPS award and his tuition paid for????
If so, that is so damn ridiculous. Imagine how much money the state would save if the requirements were a 25 on the ACT and a 3.0 GPA, or am I wrong???

Seems kind of drastic.
Desperate times call for desperate measures. Jindal shielded this middle-class welfare program for eight years and now it's on the table like everything else.

Yes. Compared to Texas where if you aren't in the top of your class you can't even get in. People wonder why Texans are proud of their state. It is awesome. We reward mediocrity

Almost directly attributable to state and federal aid forming a massive bubble.
Pull the state + federal aid and the kids that are going to college before the market corrects itself get shafted beyond belief. Not that this is actually going to happen; it's all just political jockeying. TOPS needs to be reworked to reward students who actually stand out academically. Doing away with the program entirely would be a big blow to this already abysmal state.

When I was 17 the drinking age switched to 21. When I turned 18 I found out nearly every kid that I went to school with got to go for free for no reason other than they were a year younger than me. I lived. These kids will find a way and people that work hard will still be successful.

Jindal started off with a $1 million surplus and turned it into a $850 million deficit. It really speaks for itself man..

Agreed. The whole program, while based on good intention, is a major crock of shite. Providing free school for average high school students regardless of their family income is ridiculous. If they want to breed and keep homegrown talent they should have taken that money and invested it in the school systems.

Yea Blanco was a great Governor. Lmao.
The state had a surplus of 17 million for the 04-05 budget.. Then it became 1 billion... Gee what major event occurred in Louisiana in 2005?
The reason we have a deficit is due to oil crashing. When your budget relies on 65 a barrel and it becomes 22 at one point it shouldn't be a shocker to anyone that understands a budget how you would gain a deficit quickly.

However, cutting it and not grandfathering it out for the current students is straight up thievery
Removing a free benefit is thievery?

I don't think it's coming back.
I can't believe Louisiana basically traded TOPS for Medicaid expansion.

No, you numbskull. But electing Vitter would mean not electing the idiotic socialist Democrat we have now. So there's that.
The idiots that think any person in charge means a difference are the true idiots. We are the original oil/socialist state. Cut 50% state workers is the way to go.. Won't happen. We get what we sow.

quote: What part time job can you make 5-7 grand to pay for this semester in the next month or so whenever any classes that aren't paid for are dropped from the register? The same shite we all did before college welfare frickstick. I know real life blows and all and sorry you got a taste of it before you actually had to start to work....
I don't have tops and haven't used it. I also have worked and paid my way through school out of pocket and through loans the past 4-5 years. Loans that took time to apply and get approved for and money that took time and effort to gain. There is no part time job that gains you 5k in less than a month to continue to go to school this semester.
It must've been nice to pay 300 bucks a class when you went to school pops, but the game has changed so your solution isn't a real one anymore. Cutting the program a month into a semester after zero warning or heads up is some fricked up shite and it has nothing to do with what generation it's happening to.

I have said this multiple times on this board and no one wants to believe it. They are too happy filling up their tacomas for 20 dollars.
Fwiw. I got tops for four years. Went to school for six and still got my bs in general studies. Also work in O&G.
OT's worst enemy.

quote:What? I understand the frustration with this situation, but many states do not have anything like TOPS. Yet, their brightest are still becoming Doctors, Lawyers, Engineers, etc.
kids go from potential doctors, lawyers, engineers, teachers etc, to being stuck in the plants or McDonald's
In other words, future physicians aren't relegated to McDonalds because of some scholarship program with mediocre standards.

There's a lot of idiots in this thread bragging about working their way through school before tops.
Newsflash gramps, a minimum wage 20 hour per week job covered about 80% of the cost of going to LSU each year.
That same job today gets you a semester and books. Thats it. No rent, utilities, groceries or gas.

It's impossible to pay your way through school today. Hopefully LSU and Edwards work together to make this budget painful enough that it forces the legislature to revise the constitution.
