Why don't chipmunks live in Louisiana?

I've lived here for 25+ years now, and during that time I've only seen one chipmunk, a few years ago at the BR Zoo running around in the exotic birds area. Why don't they thrive in Louisiana? Too many predators? Doesn't make sense considering all the damn squirrels here.

Maybe they prefer different types of plant life or climate?

A family of chipmunks live under my back porch. I let em chill. I'll throw em something from the grill if it falls on the ground or I over cook something.

Ancient redneck populations eradicated the native chipmunk populations by over-hunting.

I heard a rumor they were supposed to live in Livingston Parish. But then the politicians wanted a hand out.

Yeah I didn't see chipmunks until I moved to Ohio. They're not in the deep south for some reason.

They are a lot more skittish than squirrels though, so that may be a factor.

They definitely live here bro. You'll find them north of BR anywhere from Zachary to St. Francisville. I should specify in the Spring.

Why not south of BR? Do they have to be north of BR?
