I try to find places that sell to cabinet shops. I don't care if it's rough cut as I have the tools to dimension it.

Asked this question on here a few weeks back. Suggestions were Riverside Lumber in Nola and Deano Hardwoods in Broussard. I live near Gonzales so I didn't wanna go that far.

Found a place in BR called Service Supply Lumber. The people there were extremely helpful. They had hard maple, cherry, ash, alder, sapele, walnut and maybe a couple others I can remember. Tons of cypress there as well if you're in need of any.

Prices per BF for what I bought was $7.25 for walnut, $3.25 for maple, $5.30 for sapele and $5.25 for cherry.

I should also mention that their lumber is S2S1E.

S2S1E is 2 sides surfaced and 1 edge. No straight line rip.

The surfaces are fairly smooth but you're going to need a jointer for sure unless you're confident in your table saw skills to rip a perfect edge.

Service Lumber in BR is a great place for hardwoods, their main buyers are the cabinet shops, but also to hobbyist.

I bought a good amount of lumber from them when I was in BR. Moved to Lafayette recently and had to find a part time job. Ended up at C&S Building Supply on N. Bertrand. Turns out its the same company, two names, same owner.

If your in Laffy come in and see me. We are literally the same as Service in BR down to the layout of the building.

We have mostly domestic hardwoods, but we also have European Beech, and some South American woods, Sapele & Red Grandis. Sapele being the Mahogany replacement and Red Grandis is a Western Red Cedar sub in.

We also carry Cypress although its much different from LA Cypress, much softer and not as rot proof. This stuff is out GA swamps, but its still pretty, I make projects out of the #2 Cypress. I prefer knots in my cypress lumber and its much cheaper than Select Cypress.

No doubt, I got less than 5 years out of my last set of unfinished cypress outdoor chairs.

Thanks for the info on your shop. That's good to know.

I bury a dozen Viagra around an oak and water it (this is important). Wait a month, there's your hardwood.

How thick, wide? I have some oak that is still drying that I can make a good price on.

This is my biggest issue so far. I'm South of Birmingham and the only hardwood place I've found is the damn woodcraft store.

It would cost me over $150 to build a cutting board getting wood from there. No thanks.

I occassionally get some from woodcraft but luckily I made friends with a custom cabinet / furtniture shop and I ask them to add to some of their orders on occassion.

I also have a small wood purveyor about 50 miles from me I can drive to and they have access to all kinds of wood. When I built a couple of picnic tables I bought some rough cut cypress from them.

Craigslist might not have enough ads in your area but I have picked up some nice stuff check out people getting rid of lumber. I bought a small stack of old hickory flooring from a demo job that I am making a coffee table out of. Was a steal for this amazing wood.

I know what you mean. I'm thinking of making my mom a cutting board for her birthday and I priced hardwood online at Woodcraft, and it was higher than giraffe pussy.

I live in NOLA, so I'm going to go to Riverside and check to see what they have. And I'll be carrying when I go there, it's in the East.

Would yall have something like Poplar or Maple?

I'm thinking of building cabinet doors and need to find a source for the rails and stiles. Is there a wood that people generally use for this purpose? These will be painted doors btw.
