Why don't most houses in Louisiana have gutters?

It's weird. Go anywhere else most houses you see have gutters. Here, almost none do. I don't think a single house on my block has gutters. What's the deal?

They fill up with leaves and overflow

Mine does only around the back patio... Probably because with the amount of rain we get and the abundance of trees, they are just going to get clogged up.

Gutters are kind of a pain in the arse if you don't need them.
I have a section on the back of my house with gutters and I curse them in the fall.

Because they're a bitch to clean.

Because the different roof elevations make them irrelevant. I regrettably added gutters. What a waste of money and constant source of work. In hindsight, I would have just added one section on my front porch for guests using the front door.

Because most people in Louisiana are poor and are savages.

I know they are mainly used in Dallas to avoid foundation issues. The ground here has more clay and rock, thus most houses have gutters. That's the word from my house inspector.

The purpose of gutters is to divert water away from the base of the house. You need them when you have a basement to avoid water seepage through the foundation walls of your basement, especially if you have a finished basement.
As there are typically no basement in the New Orleans area they don't serve a purpose. My house in Baton Rouge had a partial basement which was always flooded.
And houses in areas that get a lot of snow typically won't have them as the weight of the snow and ice will rip them off the house

Not in these new neighborhoods with no trees.

I had gutters on my home for about five years. I removed them last summer. Complete pain in the arse.

There is product called screen that keeps leaves out of gutters. If that doesn't work, there are these people called Mexicans and Afro- Americans.

I have a basement and landscaping that I don't want to wash away. Of course, I'm on the top of a small mountain in Birmingham.

Most houses around me have gutters.

screens for gutters work great for all those problems with leaves. I'm a big fan of gutters that are installed properly and have the leaf guards.

You only need gutters if you have a basement or crawl space that rain water might accidentally drain into and flood.
Louisiana's swampy soil prevents the building of basements and crawl spaces, so no gutters are needed to wick away the excess water.

I have gutters on the back of the house so I can go out the back doors without getting soaked in the rain.
