Is Miles really to be blamed for the QB situation at LSU?

Not trying to absolve Miles or Crowton/Kragthorpe/Cameron but the state of Louisiana, as talented as we are, does not really produce that many blue chip QB's at the college level.
I mean let us go through the list of QB's at LSU
Rohan Davey: Jamaica/Florida
Matt Mauck: Indiana
Marcus Randall: Louisiana (Great guy and athlete but should not have played QB at SEC level)
JaMarcus Russell: Alabama
Matt Flynn: Texas
Ryan Perrilloux: Louisiana
Jarrett Lee: Texas
Jordan Jefferson: Louisiana
Zach Mettenberger: Georgia
Jennings: Georgia
Harris: Louisiana
I mean from 2001-20015 over a 15 year period, called the Golden Age of LSU football, we have 4 Louisiana boys starting. Marcus Randall, Ryan Perrilloux, Jordan Jefferson and Harris.
Out of the 4 only Ryan Perrilloux and Harris were truly blue chip material. If you look a little further ahead, Booty and Herb come to mind. Herb had a great career at LSU but can you really say the same about Booty?
The only Louisiana guys that we missed out on were Dak and probably Brock Berlin in 2000. Are there anyone else?
Lets face it, Louisiana does not have a recent history of producing bluechip QB's. It is also hard to get blue chip QB's to leave their home state and their flagship and come and play ball at LSU.

Well generally speaking I'm gonna look at the guy making the MOST money on the football staff and ask him....WTF? We've obviously had some serviceable QBs in the last 15 years or we wouldnt have the 2 NCs....but taken as a whole....yes.....we've screwed the pooch where QB recruiting and developing is concerned and its probably cost us at least 1 more NC.

Go ahead and start making excuses for Miles not being able to go out of the state of Louisiana to find legit quarterbacks when other SEC schools do it all the time. It is Miles' offensive philosophy that is hurting the recruiting of QBs.

I think the point you are trying to make is that LSU's recruiting bread and butter is and has been in state kids, and really we don't have that at the QB position.
Obviously the buck has to stop somewhere, but it's not as easy to get a QB here as people think.

inb4 a spread will fix our qb issues
But in all seriousness it's well known that due to Louisianas highschools football being a mostly ground and pound offense across the board out of many different sets formations and styles that Qb's in state tend to lack due to most teams just sticking their best athlete at the position.
But also you have a state right next door that 40% of our roster comes from and we can't snag one of them consistently?

Miles is a nice guy, nothing else matters

Miles is head coach and is to blame for hiring and firing OCs and QB coaches. It's been a weak spot for almost a decade. I don't know if it's failure to develop or talent evaluation. We've done poorly at the position.

QB is also a weird position where if you aren't starting, you aren't playing. Everyone else can be platooned or take plays off to catch a breather, but if you use more than one QB in a game it's either an injury or a controversy.
That being said, let's look at the last few Heisman winning quarterbacks:
Marcus Mariota: redshirt his first year, starter as a RS freshman, consistent starter through his Heisman and junior season
Jameis Winston: redshirt his first year, starter/won Heisman as a freshman, started all but one suspended game his sophomore and last season
Johnny Manziel: redshirt his first year, starter/won Heisman as a freshman, started all (but one half of a game) of his sophomore/last season.
Robert Griffin III: starter all four years for Baylor (had his second season cut short due to injury), won Heisman his last year
Cam Newton: An anomaly due to the nature of his career, regardless won the Heisman during his first and only year with that team.
Sam Bradford: starter from day 1, won his sophomore season
So we have to go all the way back to Tim Tebow to find someone who wasn't a starter for his team as a freshman or his first year with the team, and even then Tebow had significant playing time during that year he didn't start.
That's the thing with elite quarterbacks in college football. If they aren't good enough to overcome the team's depth chart from day 1, they won't be the caliber of quarterback that the rant would be satisfied with. And the talent pool, especially in Louisiana, isn't exactly rich with that kind of talent.
Unfortunately for us, Felipe Franks was that guy.

Don't you read the NegaTigers posts??? Miles is to blame for everything and we are lucky to win any games and that is when everyone on the team ignores Les and tries to win!!

This year alone we went after Shea Patterson, Feleipe Franks, and Dwayne Haskins. What people fail to understand is that when you're recruiting on a national level rather than a local level, there are at least a dozen other schools that can offer the same things or better than LSU.
Florida and Ohio State, were Franks and Haskins committed, are perfect examples of this. Others, like Ole Miss, hire the recruit's brother on staff and commit NCAA violations.

The last qb to be drafted from LA was Stefan Lefors. Dak will change that. But this whole you can win on LA talent alone is made up bullshite, and that any coach can win here is made up bullshite.

Honestly, Texas hasn't been much better when it comes to quarterbacks. And even then, we're competing with Texas, Texas A&M, Baylor, TCU, and sometimes even Texas Tech to get the guy to sign with an OOS school.

But you also have to give credit for winning 2 sec titles and a national title. It goes both ways, he deserves all the credit and all the blame. Well I blame Alleva for this Chavis/steele/Aranda situation.
But that's the problem, fans do not want to give the guy any credit.
saban and Jimbo had 2 good seasons of qb play. 2001 and 2003. And in 03 the defense carried that team. Mauck had a good season, not great, and was pretty bad in the bcs championship game.

Terrance Broadway was pretty good. What city and state is Capitol High School in?

I just don't understand why it's absolutely necessary to recruit (and play) only guys with a high 'star' rating from recruiting services. This does not always translate to production in college or the NFL for that matter. Sometimes a kid who is smart and reasonably athletic with intangibles and love for their home state school can overcome a 4 star rank, 40 time, vertical leap, ridiculous high school stats, etc. I'm not that old, but I do remember the days when most of the guys who played at LSU were there because that's where they wanted to be, and they contributed beyond their measurable skills on gameday. Maybe that's too old school in this day in age of imported players and coaches, but it seems like an under appreciated resource that could be tapped.

Is not easy to get elite QBs because our head coach won't change his offensive philosophy and get a good player caller.
Posted on 1/31/16 at 2:12 pm to mike4lsu
Doesn't matter how you spin this, it all comes back to Miles.
And a good bit of the QBs that we have gotten have been pretty big recruits, regardless where they come from. It's the passing scheme, play calling, and lack of development at the QB spot that's been the problem. That's the bigger issue and that happens when they are at LSU. It also could be just bad talent evaluations at the QB position by our staff, who is hired by Les.
I still have faith in Harris and Cameron and Les, believe it or not. But the struggles at the QB spot all come back to Les, especially considering the struggle has been pretty consistent at the QB spot while staff and players and recruits have changed. But he's the head coach.

Miles is concerned with linemen(TE included as aux tackles) and running backs, QB's are an afterthought. Hand-off and toss dive qualified only need apply.

OP I can't believe this topic is still being debated. Every knowledgeable college fan knows our QB offensive struggles. The common denominator is Les Miles.
