Who is better, how is it set up, etc.

UIL = public schools plus a few private schools that have attendance zones, and some charter schools.
There are two or three private school associations.
The public schools are better at everything.

I like our power rating system better than theirs... but it may not work in such a big state...

The public schools are better at everything which is like the exact opposite of what it's like on California

Yea, that's a better way to do playoffs for sure, but you just can't do it in Texas. Travel would kill teams. They've talked about it a couple of times, but I'm starting to like the regional setup. There are playoff rivalries that are pretty cool. My sons school has played the same team in the second round three years in a row now, and there is a healthy rivalry there now. (Actually one of the privates, Dallas Jesuit)
I also like how Texas does neutral site games for playoffs. We played Jesuit in Plano, Spring in Waco and Lake Travis at Texas A&M. Kids like getting to play in different stadiums.

Is California open enrollment?

Texas Publics actually provide a quality education which lessens the need for Private Schools.

Public schools are better because of the way taxes are set up. No state income tax, no tax at the grocery store. It's all property taxes and they stay in your community for the most part. If you're paying 6-7k in property taxes, and you have a great school to attend, there's no need to send your kid to a private school. Louisiana's taxes all go to Baton Rouge, corrupt politicians squander them.

Nope, Robin Hood ruined that back in the late eighties.

Public schools are significantly better. I want to say there are a handful of private schools that produce some good athletes (especially in basketball), but outside of that it is really weak competition

There are some private schools that produce good athletes like Jesuit and Pius, but the public schools in DFW, Houston and East Texas dominate this state.

The private school opted to create a smaller association because they could not compete with the publics in Texas. The major association in Texas is open to all so some larger privates are still members.
Very different than what is happening with LHSAA.

Even if we had public school funding like Texas I'm not sure parents would support it...

St. Marks has produced some good football talent over the years... And reduced talent that would've gone to the Plano schools, mainly.
The top tier of privates are generally considered a better education than publics. Your Jesuits and Cistercians for example.

Episcopal in Houston has a couple of big time prospects for 2017. Marvin Wilson is arguably the best player in the state and Walker Little is a pretty highly recruited OL.

Good for them?
Aren't they in some bush league private association that goes beyond Texas but has less than 30 members or something?
