I didn't and I watched the Indy bowl and it just didn't seem like a great hire. You had a Yankee coach coming down trying to beat and keep up with those Spurrier teams. 3 yards and a cloud of dust vs the fun and gun. But I was wrong. I can admit it.

I definitely had heard of him and was shocked/thrilled when we got him. To me, it was obvious that this was the guy to make us into a juggernaut.
You must live in a cave if you didn't have the same feel compared to the "type" of coaches we had been hiring (basically a string of Miles-esque types)

If not, perhaps LSU had as much to do with his brand today as anything before his arrival to LSU.
What say you?
You are correct. LSU made his reputation and continues to polish it while he is at Alabama.
Saban turned Michigan state's program around, while they were on probation. He resurrected LSU from the depths of mediocrity, into a national championship program.

If you followed college football nationally, you definitely knew who Saban was.
He was NOT a nobody, but was was considered a definite up and comer.
Anything to the contrary is revisionism.
He could have picked a job with a number of good programs.

Saban's Indy Bowl team was extremely undisciplined and out of control. They got numerous UC and PF calls in that game. At one point, the TV caught one of their players fighting/yelling at the coach on the sideline. I formed my opinion of Saban based upon that game, so I was not thrilled with the hire.

Without top recruiting class year after year he is an average coach. I would to see how he does if another school is ahead of him for 3 years in a row

He will never be a top NFL coach because he's just not that good at Xs and Os. But he's one of the best ever in college because he so good getting the Jimmies and Joes.

Absolutely I had heard of him. I didn't think we had a chance to get him, but was thrilled when we did.

Yes. He was giving MI, tOSU, and ND fits for years at MSU. Not necessarily winning all those games, but was known for a Buddy Ryan type zone-blitz defense they struggled with.
Ironically, I remember my biggest concern with him coming to LSU was to be able to recruit in the South, especially against UF, UGA, TN, and AU. He did good quickly (obviously). In that situation not because he's Nick Saban, but because he surrounded himself with a staff that could make it happen.

Lots of people re-writing history...
See quote...I followed college football no less than the avg Joe. And, I never heard of him. Half of you did not either.
Except for those showing up a decade later. BS.

Even though LSU played MSU in Bowl Game I did not know who he was or even his name. He was an unknown commodity and his record did not jump out at you. In fact I went out for a walk and my neighbor says do you know that loser that LSU hired? I said I know nothing about him. In fact after the Press Conference Saban wanted to go back to MSU! I never liked him at LSU and still do not like him!

The story I heard back then was this...after he got drubbed in Shreveport, he immediately called his agent and told him to do whatever he could to get him the LSU job because of the talent pool in Louisiana...just reporting what I heard back then...

I shook hands with Shorty three different times over his LSU career
and always left feeling like there was something creepy about him...but he knew the most important thing about college football...recruiting! Period! Recruiting dominant players that are tough!

Yes, definitely heard of him. He and Kirk Ferentz at Iowa were considered the two big up-and-comers in the coaching world. Like others have said, when we played them in the Independence Bowl, there was already a lot of speculation about him jumping to the NFL; it was basically assumed he was just waiting for the right spot to open up.
It seemed kind of weird at the time, as Dinardo was being spoken of as Paterno's replacement (LSU was considered a stepping stone then, especially compared to a program like that), and yet the media was still all about Saban. And then we rolled the Spartans, and Saban was still hailed as the better coach.
BTW, the poster that commented that LSU was hiring coaches like Les Miles is also wrong. Miles was also an up-and-comer; LSU had been hiring from the good ole boy network. Mac was on Dietzal's staff; they tried to get some new blood with Bo Rein but he died, so Stovall came from the network. Arnsparger was then an old NFL coordinator looking for a cush job, and then we hired Archer, again a coordinator from the previous staff like Mac. Curley was then a good ole boy from the South; then Dinardo came via Vandy (he made them respectable).
