Coastal Zone Season Recap

I hunt in two different areas of the state and was dumbfounded by the lack of ducks in both areas. Normally at least one spot is producing something worth going out there for. Our lease in pointe a la hache is either feast or famen but with high water all year we expected it to be slow. Of course this past weekend the ducks finally showed up. However the other spot in Forked Island we normally are more consistent with birds and this year was painfully lacking. Anyone else have as slow of a season?

opening two weeks at the wax were fantastic, quality ducks in good numbers. last month has been pathetic...this weekend we made four hunts, killed two ducks that i would generally admit to killing, the rest were "neighbor ducks"
there were ZERO flocks moving around, these were just odd pairs and stragglers. there are no ducks to speak of at the wax right now and there hasn't been for a while

Continental land north of Lake Penchant. Season pretty much sucked arse. One limit of teal killed and a few singles. Hoping next year is better. Finally getting some big ducks showing up and the season is closed.
I really wish the coastal zone opened late december and ran into late february.

Weird season. We killed nearly as many as last year, but shot a lot of divers to fill limits. The major thing I noticed was that we didn't have a solid push of new birds all year after the opener. We got a good bit of birds from Venice right after Christmas, and honestly those were probably the best two weeks of the year for us, but still...except for the first couple weeks of first split, the birds were very hard to hunt all year.
Hopefully next year is better.

Our small group got 450 last year. This year maybe 150. Sucked. Glad it is over. Next year ....

Pretty tough year between Dulac, my buddies in Delacroix, and out west in Roanoke. Believe it or not, I'm glad the season is over. Bring on the warm weather

I wasn't expecting great things this year, but didn't think it would be this bad. 34 and I went back and forth comparing notes from seasons past when the storm hit, we really thought they'd do better. I figured SAVs would take a pounding, and with early rise the birds would move back north and hit the flooded fields. We are off Brady canal and water had been 1 -1.5' above normal for most of the season. Feed is there just too deep for the puddle ducks to access. Same thing in Venice when I went between Xmas and New Years. We only killed good birds when we walked into flooded marsh and hunted. We closed out season in terrebonne killing a ton of ringnecks. 4 teal, a mottled and a can. We could have literally shot a thousand ringnecks In a day. Go 3 miles south and guys weren't firing a shot and had the same habitat. Old timers said it was worst they had in 40-50 years hunting down there, by far my worst down there.

I managed about the same number of birds as last year. Lots of divers, lots. We had the same number of grey ducks but they were very cautious for some reason and stayed out of range for the most part. This past weekend was fantastic. Young birds and bigger flights were the more noticeable characteristics to round it out. wish we had another week.

spend most of my time deer hunting but made a handfull of hunts in Montegut. Luckily we shot well and killed damn near every bird that came in. We had ok hunts but no days where they grays were just piling in like we had in the past. Did kill the first Redheads we've ever seen down there this past weekend.
gray ducks, dogris, blue wing, green wing, bufflehead, and redheads this season
few pics
ETA: numbers wise. I made 6 duck hunts
1. 4 grays, 2 dgoris
2. 5 grays, 1 bluewing
3. 3 grays, 2 bufflehead
4. 2 dogris
5. 1 greenwing (only hunted a few minutes as the water was falling fast)
6. 3 greys, 3 dogris, 2 redhead
ETA2: kind of mindblowing... I didn't see one spoonbill

The state's monthly transect flight indicates many ducks skedaddled late in the 2015-16 season. The count showed only 1.85 million ducks in Louisiana's coastal zone, a 30-percent decline from the December survey total of 2.64 million. That number is a significant 45-percent decline from last year's January count, and a 39-percent falloff from the five-year average. Especially hard hit was Southeast Louisiana, where only 637,000 ducks were counted in the Coastal Zone. Only 216,000 of those were gadwalls, the species hunters rely on to fill their straps with "big ducks." Across the entire coast, gadwall numbers fell precipitously from 807,000 in December to only 501,000 in January.
