This is true.

I managed to upgrade my SO iPhone to the iPhone 6+ from the 5S prior to.

Now, when I need to upgrade, I'll be getting shafted...

True. But take unlimited versus nonunlimited plans out of the equation.

No one's bill is going up. It's the same price, just restructured.

Jump on the next plan and pay $25 extra on top of my bill for the next 30 months, that's 2 1/2 years, if I want a new phone

Unless something has changed, they give you a credit of $25 for each line that is on Next. I assume the $25 you mentioned is the monthly 0% financing of the new phone? I figure those cancel each other out. Some still offer the cheap upfront phone, but you lose the $25 credit.

I figure it all comes out in the wash really, kinda like choosing between 0% interest or a rebate on a new car.

Your actual plan is cheaper on the next plan vs the subsidized 2-year plan. Either way, you are still essentially financing the phone. Either pay $200 every 2 years to upgrade and a higher monthly plan or pay a lower plan then finance the cost of the phone interest-free for 18 or 24 months.

If you use the next plan it is $40 for unlimited talk and text per month. If have mobile share then it is $25 per phone (save $15 per month for each phone). It was $30 for the data package I chose.

If compare the Next vs contract the price is about the same per month. Here is the rub.....

Let's say you get a new phone that will cost you $25 per month and your total bill is $100. On the next plan when you pay off your phone that cost disappears so your bill goes down to $75.

On a contract when you pay off your phone your bill remains the same because it is built into the price. So it will remain $100 forever if you don't change it.

it is cheaper for a contract short term (money up front) but more expensive if you forget to check up on your account when the contract is over.

You do. He doesnt know what he's talking about.

He's probably referring to his installment payments on the phone itself.

Well how does it for for those who do have unlimited plans? Can we just take that out of the equation?

How can it cost essentially the same?

You end up paying $750 over 30 months plus your bill.

You end up paying the exact retail value of the phone plus tax. You pay the tax up front, and then the price of the phone is divided into installments depending on your choice.
Straight from AT&T's site:

AT&T Next 24: Trade in and upgrade after 24 installments; 30 installments to payoff.

AT&T Next 18: Trade in and upgrade after 18 installments; 24 installments to payoff

AT&T Next 12: Trade in and upgrade after 12 installments; 20 installments to payoff.

AT&T Next with down payment: 30% of the device cost down and trade in and upgrade after 12 installments; 28 installments to payoff.

It's really not difficult to understand.

I used to get a new phone for a penny or five dollars and that was it I just signed a two-year commitment and continue to pay my bill.

Well, that's gone. Now you have to pay full price your phone, whatever phone that may be.

Buy a phone outright if you want to keep unlimited or take advantage of the new unlimited plan they offer now.

Monetarily there is no change. But you will be losing your unlimited plan. But everyone is.

caveat: although i think they started offering unlimited again in correlation with directv or uverse.

How? Show me the math.

We have done the math in a lot of threads about this and at the end of two years it's the same unless you go for a really cheap phone on the next plan and in that case it's cheaper.

In order to get a data plan that meets my needs, my bill will go up. Ergo why I got the unlimited plan in the first place. Thankfully I upgraded before the deadline so I have two years to figure it out.

Cellular service is a massive rip-off, just like long distance service used to be.

Most of us spend most of our time connected to wifi, but get billed as if we are on cellular 24/7.

Full price for whatever phone you pick, regardless of the plan you're on. Effective this month.

Amazing how people go full retard not understanding the next plan.

I agree, but think it is because most of their employees explain it terribly and AT&T has done a terrible job marketing it.

its not monetarily, but it can be. If I use X amount of data per month and my new plan is for Y. What happens when I use the same amount, X, and it's greater than what's allowed on my new plan?

I'll get charged for that, right?
