Amazing how people go full retard not understanding the next plan.
We have had numerous threads showing why it essentially comes out the same and it allows people that like to upgrade to do so much more often.

take advantage of the new unlimited plan they offer now.
This statement is fricking retarded. The ONLY way to get an unlimited plan is to also buy their direct tv service. That is out of the question.
I get it, the next plan works for you. That's great, but it screws some people. Maybe a small number of people but it happens.

and AT&T has done a terrible job marketing it.
I agree 100% on that
I like the next plan because I like to upgrade every 12 months or so. It works great for me.

Using made up numbers, here is what they are trying to explain to those that don't get it:
Before, you bought a phone for $200 and paid(without knowing) $15 a month(forever) to subsidize the rest of your phone.
Now, you pay $25 per month(knowingly) until it is paid off.

shite. I wish I would have paid attention. I'm pretty sure I was due for an upgrade

Yep. I actually had trouble understanding it until I read the threads on here.

What I want to know is what happens if you break or lose your phone before you're done paying for it?

It's not retarded. Plenty of people already have DTV so they can take advantage of it.
Just because it doesn't benefit you doesn't mean it's retarded. AT&T doesn't design their business around what works for "barf" from TigerDroppings.com.

It may not be perfectly suited for you but the issue is people who thinks at&t just screwed them out of $700 on a phone.
These people simply dont understand.

Either pay $200 every 2 years to upgrade and a higher monthly plan
Surely they are doing away with this completely nonsensical option, too, right? Previously, the only reason to take the subsidy would be if you're on an old plan that doesn't penalize you for it (and disguise it as a discount). I think 2-year contracts are gone for good now.

This is correct with the Next plan.
If you get on a contract you will pay that $25 forever unless you go in and change your plan.

its not monetarily, but it can be. If I use X amount of data per month and my new plan is for Y. What happens when I use the same amount, X, and it's greater than what's allowed on my new plan?
I'll get charged for that, right?
Yes. You are correct.
As it stands right now, unless something changes, the data plan to fit my needs cost more than the plan I currently have. Even if I opt to pay full retail for a phone in the future, it's still costing me more money for the same service if I calculate the cost of the phone over the next 24 months.

I have the grandfathered unlimited data plan. I heard nothing about a rebate on my plan to offset the new phone costs.
In fact, my old unlimited data plan is going up in February. We just got a letter about it.

I always opt for the insurance no matter what plan I have. It has benefited me to the tune of several new phones minus the $100 deductible.

Or U-verse, FWIW

sure. You definitely need to make sure you get the right data package that works for you.

buy a used Galaxy S5 OR S6 on Craigslist, go to Walmart and buy Straight Talk BYOP for $60 and that includes sim cards and a month of service.
Pay under $50 a month for 5 gigs of 4g data and unlimited everything else.
Set up autopay online and you'll regret not doing it sooner.
BTW,Straight talk uses AT&T towers.

Buy a new phone outright from Best Buy and stick with your old plan.

You can't be on Next with that old plan anyway which is why you didn't hear about a discount.

That's my issue, however as of the last week or so, ATT is offering unlimited plans if you have ATT wireless and DirecTv. Which I have.
I do not know what it costs for that vs what it costs now.
