When I was 17 my favorite dog I've ever had got out of the yard. After hours of searching I finally noticed a message on my mom's answering machine. It was the woman that hit him saying where he was and that she gave the collar to someone at the nearby gas station. I found him on the main road that runs in front of our neighborhood laying on his side dead. When I got closer I could see his entrails had been spilled out and his mouth was open. Devastation is the only way to put it. It lasted months for me. The fact that it was a premature death and not of the peaceful variety I believe is the reason for that.

I've lost other pets to old age and it was never anywhere near as difficult on me as that one.

2 weeks after we lost our 17 yr old dog my mom picked up a stray & brought it home. I was furious for about a day until I realized that getting attached to another dog would not disrespect my "Sister". It's hard at first but I think getting another dog helps you heal.

Doesn't get easier as you get older. Dogs don't mind if they're put on our level according to my 15 year-old Brittany. You have a lot of company in your grief and lots of Harley memories. Hang in there.

Someone just ran over my Australian Shepherd. We had a wireless fence and he got close to the road. I saw the guy hauling arse. He lives right down the road. He never touched his brakes. I was pissed. Watched him take his last few breaths. My daughter was freaking out. That was $1000 gone. Im sick.

I'm sorry to hear that man. Dec 20 I lost my 10 year old Weimaraner. It sucked and still sucks. Congestive heart failure. Woke up and found him just laying there struggling to breathe. Died on the way to the vet.

For 10 years he has been under my feet every step I have taken at home. Literally. Could not do anything without him under my feet. Slept with me, spooned like a person.

It got a little better but I still have this empty void since I lost him. Coming home sucks as he's not there to jump on me like Dino from the flintstones. I still catch my self looking out the corner of my eye at the couch and think he's sitting there as I have a gray blanket. I'll drop something on the floor and think he will eat it but it takes a few seconds to realize he's really gone.

The weirdest thing I have found is how well animals are attached and Sence when something is wrong. We have a cat also. He's a bastard. Not social or Lovable and never was (had him before the dog). When we woke up and found Rane on the floor, the cat ran in meowing and rubbing all over us. After we got home, he was extremely lovable. I had Rane cremated and I just got his ashes back the other day. We put them on the mantle and the minute we did, the cat sat on the floor all evening and night just staring at it.

I miss my buddy and though about another but it would be to hard right now. I'm like some of you and have a harder time with this than I have had with humans. It's sucks and I feel your pain man.

Very sorry about that. I lost my 16 year old lab in September and I think about her every day. Like you say, it's one of the worst pains. I still miss dogs that I lost many years ago. You never forget, nor would you want to. Time does make it hurt less, though.

You know going in that you're probably going to outlive your friend. Cherish every moment, because it's temporary, and shorter than many relationships you have with humans.

A family dog I've had since I was a kid recently was put to sleep about a month after she was diagnosed with skin cancer. I don't cry myself to sleep, but the house is a little more empty when I come home to visit.

RIP Harley. Beautiful dog.

And yes, lost one two years ago. Had to be put her to sleep because of medical issues. Very painful. Took six months but I finally got another dog (rescue). Helps a lot.

My family had a yorkie that we got when I was 9 years old. She made it just shy of 17 years when we had to put her down in July. Wasn't a total surprise like your dog but still tough to see her go.

I'm sorry for your loss, and to all who have lost a family member/dog under these circumstances. But life goes on. You are clearly a good guy and good dog owner, and I can only suggest getting a new dog soon. It will help you, and you will help them. I lost my Chocolate Lab Barbara after thirteen years, I stubbornly refused to get a new dog for 7 years. I can honestly say that was a mistake. My two dogs now play such a role in my life, and mine in theirs. Sorry again for your loss, but you'll see Harley again. Godspeed.

Sorry about you losing your buddy man.

I lost one this year. He was 14. Chihuahua. All white.

Loved that dog. He was having what looked to be seizures, but it was syncope-spelling? His heart just could not take it anymore.

He had one bad episode where he couldn't walk or stand. I rushed him to the vet -ER. Vet ran some tests on him and he stayed over night. The vet called me the next morning while they were running a test, and while I was on the phone with her, someone ran in there and said he passed away.
$600+ for one night in the vet.

But he brought so much more to the world that you just couldn't put a price on...still miss him. It will get better. But my other 3 dogs miss him like crazy.
