My opinion on Ga duck hunting is if you can get a diver to land in your decoy spread on public water, then you have earned the right to shoot it off of the water.

second, it's poor form to shoot a bird on the water unless you're a small kid. there's nothing sporting about a skillet shot unless it's to dispatch a cripple. and you spare no expense to dispatch the crip.
So it is more "sporty" to shoot a duck that was just flying by? I find the sport in hunting to be outsmarting the animal and getting a duck to decoy is much more difficult than throwing steel in the sky hoping to hit a high flyer. In fact it used to be frowned upon to shoot a duck that hadn't lit in the decoys.

People really pass on hens?
Nothing wrong with a water swat either.

Damn right. I'll shoot'em flying, on the water, roosting, baited, in front of dogs, in a high fence or whatever the hell else it takes. I ain't shootin'em cause I like'em, shootin'em cause I hate'em

I don't think they hang on, I think the crippled bird just gets hung up in or under something.

Hah. Very nice
One of my favorite Phil Robertson quotes goes something like this:
"Someone once asked me if I shoot ducks while they're swimming. No, I said, I wait till they stop!"

Yea. Don't shoot hens on the water. Scare them, shoot at them, miss, then send them my way. I have a nice pond they can land in and a box full of shells.

LOL
we all love to hear from the self righteous few on the OB
and also betting he did much worse than the OP as a newcomer to the sport.

Haha! Neither. Wouldn't hunt that close to a gator with only one exit and no pistol.

and the fact that you apparently didn't get in the water and wade around to make a concerted effort to find the bird is also troublesome.
Not sure how this was apparent by virtue of my OP? I went out as far as I could, which was well past where I shot her. I might be a newbie, but I won't pull on a bird if there's a chance the waters too deep for me to retrieve.
And did you fail to read that I hunt almost exclusively by myself and I've never gone out with any experienced duck hunters? Maybe you'd like to invite a novice along and teach someone how to follow etiquette? If not, please don't presume and project irresponsible hunting onto me where there is none. I always follow the law!

My logic was that the easiest shot IS the most ethical, because it's gonna be a clean, quick kill.

except you found out that it isn't either of those things
very common to wound and not kill a duck on the water unless you get a head shot
half your pattern goes in the water and is deflected

IMHO you ain't really lived till you shoot a ditch in a bunch of mallards lit on the water.

They do grab on to stuff, I seent it. Water wasn't deep enough to get all the way under and his curls was sticking up.
