Just how much of a waste of money are cruises?

If you have the means to afford a luxury cruise all the power to you.
But for the rest of us I don't see how a cruise is appealing, the Carnival Cruises and other non-luxury cruise lines of the world.
Next time you go to Wal-Mart think to yourself "Would I want to spend a week on a boat with these people?" because that is what these cruises basically are, being on a boat in the middle of the ocean with a bunch of riff raff, undesirables, and trash.
That is why I can't understand why people would want to go on a non-luxury cruise.

I don't get why so many people worry about how others spend their money or what they do with it. I personally don't care what you, how you live and what you wear unless you are interfering with other people's right to live the way they want to.
I have been on one cruise and it was a fun experience.

Cruises are one of the best values out there as far as vacations are concerned. Good food, decent shows, and a great variety of excursions in exotic locales. I've only been on 3 cruises (not really my thing), but I thoroughly enjoyed all of them - and I'm more intelligent than 99% of you and outlearn 98% of you, so my opinion is highly valued on this board. As far as the trash goes, I generally only associate with the people I went with. On one cruise, the "other" people at our dining table were an A-10 Warthog pilot and his wife, and they hooked up with us for all the excursions. I can live with that.
