Lucas may have handed the Star Wars reins over to Lucasfilm and J.J. Abrams, but that doesn’t mean he’s done having fun in that galaxy far, far away. In this video from Vanity Fair’s New Establishment Summit, Lucas is full of winking jokes for Star Wars fans. Which Star Wars character would he most like to be? “Jar Jar Binks,” Lucas replies, knowing full well the floppy-eared Gungan is the most hated character of the prequels.

Even more mischievously, Lucas says he’s most curious to find out what happened to Darth Vader’s grandkids. It’s a question that ties into the rumors swirling around the carefully guarded plot of The Force Awakens, and provokes a rueful shake of the head from Abrams.

But for all his inside jokes and self-deprecating nods, Lucas is still protective of the space saga he helped create. “There’s more to it than just spaceships,” he says. But his biggest concern about the ever-expanding universe? That “the Force doesn’t get muddled into a bunch of gobbledygook.” But Lucas can have faith in Star Wars padawan J.J. Abrams. At the Summit, Abrams acknowledged that Star Wars is “a religion for some people.” A religion that, Lucas would probably tell him, you have to remember to have fun with.

He doesn't need to explain, the prequel showed why he's done directing star Wars movies lol. No explanation needed!

He's the one who has constantly made it about selling toys and co-branding, not me.

He's the one that fricked that up with midichlorians in the so-called "prequels".

He's the one that fricked up Darth Vader, reducing him from, arguably, the greatest fictional villain of all time (with a very credible redemption story) to a whiny arse punk who isn't a Jedi killer at all, but a mass murderer of children.

quote:

“Jar Jar Binks,”

That's on Lucas.

I accept the Ewok compromise at the time - there were few other credible choices. However, Jar Jar was a conscious effort to pander to the 10 and unders and sell them toys, lunch boxes, etc.

“And it’s not much fun. You can’t experiment.”

frick George Lucas in the ear.

Oh you can experiment.

But when your "experiment" results in an unmitigated disaster that almost torpedoed a franchise then yeah you're going to get some shite.

"Jar Jar is the key to all of this" - George Lucas in late 90s.

That's all you need to know why he's done...

He had a fantastic idea for a story, but very little ability to tell it through film. Glad Disney has it now other than the absurd amount of marketing that they've done. Lucas loved him some marketing, but Disney is just through the roof.

Question for all of you Star Wars fans: what is the best order to watch the films? I have never seen them, but recently got them from a friend.

Midi-chlorians were first conceived by George Lucas as early as 1977. In this time the first Expanded Universe products were being created, including the ongoing Marvel Star Wars series and Alan Dean Foster's novel Splinter of the Mind's Eye. Lucas sat down with a member of his staff, Carol Titelman, to dictate a number of guidelines for these works, explaining various concepts of his universe. Among them were an explanation of midi-chlorians, which Force-sensitive beings were said to have more of in their cells.[33] However, Lucas did not feel he had the time to introduce the concept of midi-chlorians. The idea would not appear in any Star Wars product for twenty-two years; Lucas chose 1999's Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace as the opportunity to first mention the midi-chlorians, explaining why some were sensitive to the Force while others were not, an issue that he had left unresolved since the original film Star Wars.

There's a reason that the most popular movie in the series among most fans is the one he had the least to do with. We're all thankful for his wonderful story and characters, but we're also happy he handed the reigns over to someone else. I honestly would like to see a reboot of the prequels one day so that they can erase the ones he made from our memory.

He was the key to the marketing plan - because Jar Jar was already grown. They could only sell the 8-year old Anakin pod racing crap for 1 movie cycle.

Dolla bills, y'all.

(And I don't begrudge somebody trying to make a buck. They're just not going to make it off me anymore - when they frick up an IP so badly that Disney and Abrams have to "rescue" it - I'm out.)

Man, is he that clueless? He's the one that did that with the stupid "midiclorians.
