Probably going order my son one today based off of a few recommendations from friends. My son is actually a little bigger than me, but doesn't like recoil very much. He likes to shoot at the range a lot and doesn't like something that hurts after a few shots. How is this gun out to say 150 yards? Pros/Cons?

Do it. I've shot everything from a 30-30 to a 300 wsm, and it's by far my favorite round.

Pretty darn good. Ballistics are excellent.

... I got one last year for my then 11 year old, based on recommendations from this board. of the 3 deer he shot with it so far, 2 dropped in their tracks and one we tracked only about 75 yards. all shots at least out 125 yards or further. I personally love it and would recommend.

There really aren't too many cons. It's a great round for deer, especially if you don't like recoil. It's more than fine at that range, in fact it's generally recognized as one of the more flat shooting deer rounds.

i have 2 in a browning X-bolt. One for me and one for my wife. We both have dropped deer out to 150 yds. Never had one run. I have killed hogs at 100 yds. I shoot the ballistic silver tips.
No cons with power or range for what i do with it.

150 yards is a chip shot for that cartridge.
It will kill deer farther than MOST people should be shooting at them.
Myself included.

The 7mm-08 is based on the 308 cartridge as are the 243 and 260 as well. It breaks down like this:

.243 = 6mm bullet
.260 = 6.5mm bullet
7mm = 7mm bullet
.308 = 7.62mm bullet

All share the same case and powder capacity (very close). So the smaller the bullet, the faster it will shoot and the less recoil it will have.

7mm-08 would be my choice out of these if you aren't a reloader. It will be easy to find and should be soft shooting enough for your kid.

My first deer was taken with a .260 Remington 700 FWIW.

7mm08 is the shite

I love it - I am getting that caliber for me to use - I have gotten in a couple of hunts with my sons' 7mm08 and it is a sweet shooting gun.

My sons and neoh w have dropped 6 deer with the round and only 1 did not drop in its tracks - but it was a very simple recover.

Great caliber, not much recoil but plenty of power for deer. One thing to consider is a ammo selection and cost. Most stores don't have much in the way of variety to choose from and it is usually more expensive that more popular calibers.

Got one for my son when he was 11. He loves it, and in fact his Grandpa uses it when we are not up at the camp because he says it is the smoothest shooting round he has seen, and his 270 beats up his shoulder. At 65, I don't blame him one bit.

Bonescanner, Congrats on taking your son deer hunting. As far as "starter" guns go, it'd be hard to beat the 7-08. It's fine to 150 yards and well beyond that. If you can find them, there are also reduced recoil loads available. The only potential con is availabiity of ammo. I always thought 7-08 ammo would be as available as anything else nowadays, but that's NOT the case. After I bought a 7-08 XP-100 handgun a few years ago I started looking for factory ammo so I could reload the brass (couldn't find ANY brass anywhere). That's when I found that some Wal-Mart's (including mine) do NOT stock the 7-08. I've only hunted w/ my 7-08 for 2 seasons, but it's already a favorite of mine. At the range, be sure your son uses ear plugs + ear muffs. Be sure the gun has a nice recoil pad. Consider placing a small sand bag between butt pad and shoulder for long shooting sessions.

I'd just get a .243. Cheaper and more available ammo

And along with the 7mm-08 concurrence, get him a Savage Axis in camo. The trigger is smooth and it is a very accurate rifle in the $350 range!
