What is the OB's opinion of the .35 Whelen?

I think my wife is getting me one for my birthday. It'll mainly be used for white tail. Would it be enough for carribou, elk, brown bear?

It's enough for anything on this continent. It's a big badass caliber.
I wouldn't hunt brown bear with it because I'd rather have something made for African shite for that, but otherwise it's very versitile.

Plenty for all three of those. Nice caliber

Will kill everything you could hunt in North America and could be used on plains game in Africa (even some dangerous game like leopard).

200 grain is a badass load. Zero at 200 yds is a piece of cake, is good to 300 yds, but the drop is about 12-15" at 300. I have one and really like it. I have killed 3-4 whitetails with mine in the last 3 years.

Excellent round to kill anything but it will drop like a rock after 200yds so take that into account if you plan on going out west

very popular caliber here in MS...used primarily during the primitive weapon season.

the only primitive caliber taht should even be considered

Started shooting one two years ago, haven't picked up a different gun since. Straight carnage

It's a great caliber. I shoot Barnes 180 gr.(more than enough for white tail and most anything else) but if that's not enough for you) you can go up to 250gr.. Enjoy it.

It's a kicking son of a bitch.
I shot both a .270 and 35 Whelen sighting in a few weeks ago, and I would honestly say it kicks about 15 to 20 times harder than a .270.

I use one for primitive weapon season but after that it's too much gun for whitetail

I can kill enough deer during gun season...however it is fun to watch the guys get the shite kicked out of them when sighting them in for the season.

I bought one a few months ago and we couldn't get it sighted in for some reason. Took about 15 rds. My shoulder still hates me
Can't wait to get to use it in less than 2 weeks

Nice caliber, but a 30.06 is a more versatile choice.
Pair a 30.06 with a 375 H&H and you are good to go anywhere.

Fellow posters got one in his family that I've used for "primitive." It's an awesome gun with tons of knock down power.

I have taken dozens of animals with this caliber. Hunted all over Africa with it, including plains game, a lion, and a leopard.
While I think it could work fine for a brown bear, I prefer the step up to a 375. Of course, there is no substitute for proper shot placement. But a brown bear is heavy and tough animal. You need some good penetration unless your shot placement is good.
In Africa, I have also used a 7x57 for smaller plains game. And I've stepped up to 416 Rigby, 375, and 470NE for large dangerous game.
TL/DR: I love my 35 Whelen
