Yeah, I will be very surprised if it doesn't pass 500,000 miles. When he bought it he was concerned about the "plastic" bed but so far it's held up well, even with carrying 2000 lbs in it.

i don't see the point in buying mid-size these days
they are equally as expensive as full sized and the difference in fuel efficiency between the two is negligible for eco-diesel(ram) or eco-boost(ford) type engines

might as well get the bigger one, this was my thought process when buying my new truck

Is the Toyota Tacoma truly a "mid-sized" truck?

The pictures didn't come through so I just reposted the OP:

I get the visual appeal. It seems to me that they just appear bigger because of the wide fender molding and larger tires. The trucks are even jacked up higher to appear bigger so they have to add the mud flaps to close that gap between the ground and truck for the illusion that it's a bigger truck. Especially since it's marketed as such, with the "Prerunner" package to make a 2x4 truck look like a 4x4.

It's clearly obvious when I see a base model without all of the body side molding, large tires and mud flaps. Then compare that to the one that is commonly seen about. They're the same truck, it's just made to look bigger.

I've never driven one, but to those of you that have, do you feel they are truly mid-sized?

Base Tacoma:

Most commonly seen Prerunner 4x2 or 4x4 Tacoma:

And from later in the thread:

Tacoma:
Head Room: 40.0"
Hip Room: 53.6"
Leg Room: 41.7"
Shoulder Room: 57.7"

Ranger:
Head Room: 39.2"
Hip Room: 52.7"
Leg Room: 42.4"
Shoulder Room: 54.5"

And that's what I want. See, I'm not going to use my truck to tow (most likely). I need it for yard maintenance (tree and bush clippings), occasional hauling of landscaping stuff for our yard, and just occasional hauling of whatever is too big to fit in our SUV...which I find I have a use for more often than not.

That's why I want a smaller midsize truck. It's gonna be my version of a smaller "SUV" except it'll have hauling capacity.

I don't think I've ever seen a base truck like you posted in a crew cab

That would look interesting

Love my Tacoma. 26 mpg? I think mine gets 15 or so, but it's a manual (gets worse mileage than the auto) V6 4x.

Yeah, the mid-sized prices are equal to a full size truck and the mpg is close.

It really depends on how your gonna use it. If doing a lot of towing go with a full size, but if your into off-roading the mid-size is better.

Does GMC make a truck that compares to Toyota or Chevy?

Crew cab only.

This and the Tacoma isn't getting 26 mpg. Also don't get a 4 banger anything. The Tacoma is the correct answer here Killz; I have an '06 and it's pretty much bullet proof.

Toyota has done a remarkable job at selling the more commonly seen Tacoma's by offering the prerunner package where you can get a 4x4 look but it's really a 4x2. You're right, I hardly ever see the base. When I do, it looks like a sled sliding along the ground compared to it's jacked up upgraded model. I guess that's where Toyota gets off selling more of the prerunners than the base... nobody wants to be in a truck that rides at nearly the same height as a Chevy Malibu. Although it's still functional, it's all about image these days.

I've owned 3 Nissan Frontiers. Currently have a 2012.

The Frontier is going to be the cheapest out of the bunch. The Colorado is the most expensive and comes with the navigation etc. If all that shite is important to you then get the Colorado.

If it isn't get the Frontier. Motor has plenty, and you can get it decently equipped for a better price than the Taco.

Big bonus for me on the Frontier is the roof rack, running boards, spray in bedliner, and utilitrack system are standard. I use the shite out of all of them.

I have a 16 Tacoma, best purchase I've ever made. Handles like a car, good pickup, and look great.

The real reason to buy them is the reliability though. Best resale value year after year for a reason.

I've own a 2009 Colorado and towed a pretty loaded down trailer with it every day for 2 years, bought it new and has right at 110k on it now. Never done a thing to it other than oil changes and tranny fluid change at like 60k miles. It's absolutely bulletproof and I'll drive it until it dies. On the Colorado forum I'm on quite a few people have 300k+ on them. Look for a 2008+ 3.7, the 3.5 from 2004-2007 had a weird problem with the cylinder head but it is covered under unlimited mileage warranty I do believe.

The 2016s are very very nice and pretty inexpensive for what you get. I test drove a 2wd fully loaded and I think sticker was 29k. Not bad at all. 2017s will have the duramax as an option which is what I would absolutely get if you can

Had an 08 Frontier and recently a 14 as a rental. I think the turning radius on my current f250 is better.
