Pickup Truck Owners: I want to purchase a midsize truck and need advice

I haven't owned a truck before but I find that I need a truck for hauling reasons more often than I'd expect. Therefore, I'm seriously considering purchasing a midsize truck with crew cab and I'd like to know which truck you think is the best buy.
I've done research and narrowed down my decision to three different models. What I want is a midsize truck (I don't have a need for a large truck fancy truck) with crew cab for my children which gets decent gas mileage compared to more efficient SUVs.
Here is my list (in order of most desirable to least desirable):
1) Toyota Tacoma - Research indicates it gets about 26 miles to the gallon on the highway. Also, I've talked to several farmers in the family who know their trucks and they say that a Toyota truck will last forever, which makes it extremely reliable. Just look at what the rest of the globe chooses as their favorite truck - Toyota. Hell, ISIS has built an army of Toyota trucks.
2) Chevy Colorado - Research indicates that the Colorado has really become a proven truck and is challenging the market to be the best midsize truck period. Supposedly, the 2016 model will be ahead of it's time in terms of what it offers. However, I'm not a huge fan of the exterior look. To me it just looks blah. Sort of boring. I'm willing to put up with that if this truck is actually as reliable and well built as research indicates...but I prefer the Tacoma's exterior look.
3) Nissan Frontier - Don't really know a lot about this truck. What I do know is I really like the Frontier's exterior look. I think it looks sharp. It shows up on some "Best of" lists, but it's never at the top. Toyota and Chevy are the two that are always competing for the top honors.
Any suggestions from user experience would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Get a Canyon or a Colorado. I think they tow up to 7K pounds. Tacomas and Frontiers won't come close to that.

Outdoor board. The photos you posted are all of last year's models. The Tacoma has been updated and the Colorado and Canyon are all new.
Can't go wrong with either choice. I like the Colorado a lot, but don't forget the Canyon....which looks very nice as well.
Both can be had with a turbo diesel starting around Thanksgiving, and both share the same axles, transmission, and suspension bits with the Silverado and Sierra.
Tacoma has a good reputation for reliability. If it's better than the Colorado or Frontier in that respect, it's probably a testament to the Tacoma more than an indictment on the Chevy or Nissan. They are all very good trucks.

although tacoma is close to what the tundra was, it's still not the same. i wish toyota would not have made the tundra so big.

The tacoma is the way to go. My dads got a 2007 with 280,000. Just basic maintenance.
They get about 23 mpg on the highway but drops to about 16 when towing.

I hear good things about the Colorado, but I want to wait a few years and see what issues they have.
I'm not familar with the 2016 Tacomas yet, but I have the last generation Tacoma and in 170,000 miles have not had a single engine or drivetrain issue, other than replacing the U-joints because they were clicking ($70 for all three)
I love it and it has held the value that I paid for it for the last four years (I bought it used - $9000, KBB 11,300 current)
The interior is a little cheap would be my biggest Tacoma complaint and the 4.0 is noisy on the top, took me a while to get used to that. I think because it's aluminum.

Have a 2006 colorado Z71. Havent had a problem yet with the truck at 120k miles (knock on wood).

I meant crew cab. I didn't realize the difference until you posted it. I edited the OP. Thanks for pointing that out so I won't sound like an idiot when I actually go shopping for a midsize truck.

The old model Colorado was very sturdy, but kind of plain for American tastes. If I remember, you could get them with the 5.3L V8 which is pretty awesome in a truck that size.
You are going to want the crew cab if you ever put an adult in the back seat. Extended cab on these trucks are tiny.

Exactly what I've heard. I've heard they last forever and are very reliable. That's what I want. I just need it for use around town, to and from work, or when I'm hauling. My wife and I use the "family SUV" for traveling anyhow.

They do if you want to buy a 2wd. Look on autotrader and even Ebay in places that have a need for 4x4, like Colorado or Utah. You will find tacomas well below book value.
Then if you want to make side money buy a Suburu, any good Suburu and drive it out there and sell it. Any place that pretty much requires 4x4 will always be a Suburau and Jeep haven and they sell much above book value, while Subarus don't do as well here in the south.
I bought mine on an Ebay bid, sent $1k by Paypal that night, sent a mechanic to look at it the next day and send me dozens of engine and frame pics and interior and stuff. Then two days after that I took a flight to Denver and a bus to Boulder and picked it up and made a great drive across the west. Climbed Pikes Peak, saw Caddilac Ranch, went to a Saints game in Houston, good trip.

Of those 3 I would buy the Tacoma now, but if you are willing to wait a year then I would look into the Colorado duramax diesel. I always listen to the old rule of never buy a truck or care in the first model year, but it does look impressive. Bout time the US got midsize diesel trucks, LINK, LINK
