I'm Very new to waterfowl hunting and looking to start at least practicing calling with the season being right around the corner. Any recommendations for a good beginner call that won't break the bank? Thank you in advance ![](https://images.tigerdroppings.com/Images/Icons/Iconcheers.gif)

sound's like you'll fit right in if you're hunting Pointe Aux Chenes.
best bet is don't call at all.

If that's the case, then you may be ready to go for next season, and that's only if you hunt with someone that is very experienced this season often and are a fast learner. A very underrated part of calling is knowing when not to call, which is most of the time.

It's hard to beat a Haydel DR-85 Mallard Hen for the money.

Haydel DR-85. $18
Still have mine on my lanyard. Was my first call and the best sounding call I have IMO.

OP, get your hands on The Art of Commanding by Phil Robertson. I think he made this back in the early 90's. Way before DD. Will get you primed to at least know how to call and when.

I second the whistle recommendation. If you practice, you can do a lot with a whistle.
I'd find something that doesn't take a lot of air to blow, such as a classic commander(I think it's called). Then just learn to quack. Don't try to blow it 10 times in a row, just learn to do single quacks and don't call too often.

I bought a DR-85 as my first call and to this day is it still my go-to outside of a whistle.

Get yourself a whistle

About 12 years old. Still calls like it just came out the plastic. Even when it's clogged up with dip
