In the early 80s, I remember my family renting a movie player with these big "floppy disk" looking things. Anybody remember these and the proper name for these?

From far away, that looks like a personal pizza oven.

Beta, VCR and Laser Disc all happened roughly at the same time.

VCR just won out because of cost and the others faded away.

Laser disc is still the only way to get a good digital copy of the ORIGINAL version of Star Wars.

At least for now.

I think the laser discs came after the VHS tapes.

Remember when VHS movies cost about $89 a pop? That's in 1980s money too. I seem to recall that being the price for Platoon.

We had one of those growing up. You had to flip the movie over about halfway through.

Minor hijack here:

I miss wandering aisles of a video rental store. Great way to kill time and start conversation with friends.

My uncle owned a video store in BR, he would pay like $250-350 for some of the tapes. Rental tapes were a different quality and plus you had to pay fees and such so they taxed the tapes. They were never the same prices until the late 80's. It was cool becuase he would make us bootlegs of all the new movies when they came out.
I also remember being really young and going back into his back section behind the curtain where they had all the neon lights and seeing the movies I shouldn't have seen.
