We talk about 18, but look at the ages of consent around the world.

The Ukraine thread got me thinking. Why the arbitrary age of 18? Looking around the world, it seems far and away that 18 is not the norm. And outside of our southern neighbor (12 Mexico? 12!? Wtf is wrong with you!?)
And some middle eastern shithole (9!?!? You can just GTFO)
It seems to almost puritanical that our Federal laws make 18 the cut off.
What is the reasoning behind this? Should we see a change in the way laws are written, especially in this new digital age?
Is the rest of the world simply populated by creepy uncles and we are somehow the gold standard, or are we fooling ourselves in some sort of prudish nonsense.
Given that marriages of 15-16 year olds to grown men was not uncommon less than a century ago, what caused the shift?
The suffrage movement?
And should it be changed to reflect an increasingly sexualized world?

If we're just talking about doing the deed I agree the age of consent could be lower. The problem is the age of consent for getting pregnant should be 35 with a steady source of income.

16 should be the age of consent, and it should be uniform across the country. If you like old movies, you can see that even as late as the fifties "sweet sixteen" was somewhat considered a girl's age for mature dating.
