Why is it when someone starts with "well, I'm a ____..."

That they inevitably say something incredibly stupid and judgemental? I've heard this so many times, and today I almost lost it while waiting for take out.
A guy saw my French Quarter Festival shirt I had on, and started asking about Nola. I heard him say "Well, I'm a Christian" and I knew something dumb was going to come out of his mouth. He ended up saying:
"Well, I'm a Christian, and I don't know much about New Orleans. But my pastor told me the hurricane was because there was a gay convention in town. And he's really smart."
I proceeded to lay into him loudly. Which was funny, since it was in an authentic Mexican joint, and we were the only white guys inside. But hearing something that stupid, about a tragedy that affected so many people I know and care about, made me lose it.
This isn't an attack on Christians. Half my family is Catholic, the other is Southern Baptist. But this is about Christians who think they can say anything they want, as long as they preface it with "I'm a Christian." No, you aren't a true Christian, you're judgemental a-hole. Whatever happened to the whole, let ye without sin cast the first stone, and judge not, that ye be not judged?
Fyi, you aren't educating anyone or getting your message across. You're are making people hate Christians, and turning people away from your faith.

because they're generally stupid and judgemental.

You really could substitute that for anything. I hate christians as much as the next guy, but if he said he was gay, muslim, buddhist, satanist, republican, chances are whatever was coming out of his mouth was going to suck.

The opening line "I'm not a _________, but..." or the inverse is the speech hallmark of a dummy.

Many "Christians" are not very Christ like.

Wrong board.

Good point. Anyone that starts with "well, I'm a _____, but" they are probably going to say something dumb. But I've just noticed it with Christians lately than other groups. But I guess it's not a surprise, because the Denver area has very eclectic views.

Because when you substitute identity for reason, you are basically just giving a disclaimer of "This is why I'm about to say some irrational stuff. I subconsciously know it is and saying so up front makes me feel better about the cognitive dissonance."

Well, you can always call the Original Chubbys on 38th inn Denver, and ask if two white guys were yelling at each other around lunch time.
I figured the OT was the go to board for random shite. And I don't have a reputation for starting bs, troll threads. I barely start threads. I usually just crack jokes, and occasionally chime in with a serious comment.
But seriously, this isn't specifically about Christians. If it were, I'd have a pissed off grandmother waiting for me oh the other side of the gates.

Oh look, another Christian bashing thread, how fresh and riveting

"I'm a _______, but" is almost always followed by something incredibly stupid and/or something that confirms that the speaker is, in fact, the opposite of what they claim.
"I'm a Christian, but" [something completely un-Christlike]
"I'm not a racist but" [something completely racist]
"I don't agree with domestic abuse, but" [something justifying domestic abuse]
