Best non-gun weapon for home defense?

Did a search and couldn't find anything exactly on point (and maybe this should be for the OT, but figured I'd get better responses here).
Anyway, like the title says I'm wondering if I should get a weapon (other than the baseball bat I currently have) in case the worst happens. I don't want a gun (nothing against guns; just don't want one for a number of reasons (not the least of which is I just don't want one)).
I'm primarily looking for something that won't but a huge risk if a kid accidentally stumbles upon it. I was looking into those batons that have an electric prong on them, but I don't know how effective they are.
Ease of use for a very small wife (who won't ever touch a gun) would be helpful as well.

throw your tampons at the intruder.

Get a Bible so you can pray the intruder doesn't have a gun.

baseball bat with a bunch of big nails sticking out of it
how about a spear or some med-evil looking sword
edit: how about a mace?

For night time, a bright arse flashlight and a paintball gun.
Blind them with the flashlight then shoot them with red paintballs.

sounds like you're pretty screwed if said intruder has a gun.
why didn't your husband teach you to shoot a gun?

Any weapon that can incapacitate an intruder will also do so with a child. Get a pepper spray fogger and some running shoes. That's the only thing I can think of.
P.S. I can't imagine life without a home defense pistol/shottie/rifle

How about you get trained and learn to use a gun?
Just like any other tool out there, like a machete or large knife, shooting a handgun really only requires proper safety etiquette and education.
Are you expecting to get a sword and become the next Samurai master with no training whatsoever? I think you're setting yourself up for failure and for injury.
Here's the thing that a gun provides that nothing else does:
distance
Every other weapon is a contact weapon. They basically have to be on top of you for you to use it. It increases the likelihood of it being taken from you 10 fold.
I highly advise you go and get some professional training. If you're in the Baton Rouge area, I am a certified instructor and would be more than okay with teaching you and your wife how to shoot. Just like with anything else, it's an acquired skill and there is nothing to be afraid of.
It is the only tool on this planet that can effectively equal out the size difference of a 100lb woman and a 300lb man. Nothing else comes close.

Kimber Pepper Blaster. It shoots a steady stream instead of an aerosol mist. Spray, run out the house, call the cops.

Big dog is the correct answer...

My wife's not a fan of guns either, but she's even less of a fan of someone with a gun and us not having one. I would suggest a rape whistle.

Condoms so when you get raped you won't catch aids.
ETA: Sorry, but a real answer from me would be a tazer of some sort.
