The police aren't going to keep the guns. I'd just get rid of them in some way.
I'm not suggesting the mother is to blame for this because as I've said, I doubt he gave clues that he would hurt other people. Even if he did, unless he actually told her what he was going to do, I don't see how there is responsibility on her part. I think she will live in her own self punishment for the rest of her life, anyway.

Mental illness can skip generations. Of my siblings, we have a dickhead, a cop and your average joe (me). Does my Mom get credits for two of them and demerits for the one?
This is fricking stupid.
Is the dickhead violent and robbing or murdering people?

He has a violent rap sheet. Domestic violence, assault, drinking and driving, etc.

She was in denial that her son had the capability of doing something like that. Yeah, if he told her he was gonna do it as he walked out the door, she it at fault.
Don't just jump down her throat for being a single mother caring for her son though. Seems like she tried to do everything she could to accommodate him. He had issues. That's the problem here
Eta: While Obuzzard and ilk are on TV championing banning of guns, I would hope his mother would get the opportunity to speak on how much mental health is an issue in these situations (and the sensationalized media would give her more than two seconds of air time)

Mental health issues are very real and no one mentions that when these things happen. They may mention the mental health history, but not that it is something which needs to be addressed and it clearly does. The "gun" was jumped yesterday before the facts were in because it was an opportunity to argue about gun control. More time was spent on that by Obama than the victims.
The facts are that if a person wants to kill people, s/he will find a way. Dying is not a concern anymore than the death penalty is a deterent. It's not. No murderer is thinking about the death penalty when contemplating the crime. That's a joke.

My problem is that when this happens - it's the country needs a better health care system or tight gun control laws.
My problem with this is that it puts the onus on something outside of us (government) and gives people a false sense of security.
The reality is that tragedy strikes in life. It is disturbing that these shooting sprees seem to be a trend. However, what gives? Weapons have been available for decades but have the gun laws become so loose that mass serial killers are now popping out of the wood works? Does this perpetrator go on living a life where society isn't at harm because he has no access to a gun?
I don't own a gun and I am not an NRA shrill. This just seems illogical to me.

I deal with it on a daily basis. I'm fully aware of how mental issues are overlooked. I'm really interested to see if this guy had a real diagnosis and what did they try to do to get him help. One story mentioned he was in rehab. You don't go to rehab for mental illness. So far, with the little information I've seen, I'm going with mom did a great job raising Johhny Sociopath but I guess I'll tone it down a bit until more info comes out.

Wait for the BIG BOOM, when they publish a photo of the shooter's mother, who went with him to shooting range and reports she would carry gun cases for son!
Evidently he could not read, this campus was a "Gun Free Campus"!

This is very true to a point and I could run this thing another 50 pages discussing social media and it's role in all of this. There was a twitter screenshot of one of the girl's on that campus while the shooting was going on. She was inundated by national media producers tweeting her to contact them to give information. Now, two things wrong here: First, the fact that there's an active shooting going on and you're tweeting. Second, the national media pouncing like wolves is disgusting. I could go on but all of that "look at me" stuff is a problem. Not THE problem, just A problem.

A few hours ago is was at $49K and now it's over $126K. That's amazing and I hope it keeps growing. That guy deserves it.

Yea, I just watched it go up like $15k in around 10 minutes.

But they've done such a great job stopping drugs from entering the country... oh wait.
But they've done such a great job of stopping illegal immigrants from entering the country...oh wait.
But they've proven that tough gun control laws have an immediate effect on gun crime...oh wait.
Even if I could push a button that removed every single gun from the US, I wouldn't even think about pushing it for one second.
Within days, the criminals would be packing again and the law abiding citizens would be easy targets.
I can't imagine the massacre that would occur in Uptown New Orleans if every law abiding citizen had their guns taken and every thug knew they could enter any home without fear.
Liberals love saying gun control so they don't have to deal with ANY of the REAL issues and they can blame the NRA when nothing positive happens.
I don't own a gun, but I feel safer at night because the THUGS don't know that I don't have a gun in my home.

IMHO, people would be more inclined to support something like free mental health care (not pill mills) than banning guns. The former benefits everyone, and the latter benefits no one and divides the country.

I would just like to see you have to take a mental health test and pass a class to own a gun.
You can't drive a car without a license, have to pass a test, and can't be blind. I don't see why you can be crazy, mentally disturbed, etc and own a gun.
I'm not saying it would stop this stuff from happening completely, but for everyone saying...
They knew he was crazy, all the signs were there, and they did nothing... Well it would give them and cops the legal ability to do something if he had a gun and didn't have a license to own a gun cause he hadn't passed a mental evaluation.
If you knew a person like this and knew they had guns, you could actually go to cops and the cops could do something about it. Whereas now, they can't do anything about it until it's already over.

I'm the same.
Although I've come very close to pulling the trigger and buying one a number of times.

Do you tell the truth when you take job application personality tests? Have you ever lied? Have you ever been sad one day, and then happy the next? Who gets to decide who is too crazy to own a firearm, and what level will they set that at?
Not trying to be a dick, but I've said it multiple times in this thread. I wish people would think these "solutions" through before offering them up as solutions. I mean, there are very basic, simple rebuttals to that argument
