In fact, for all their irrationality in other areas, NFL teams have usually been able to anticipate these problems and have been remarkably unsentimental in parting ways with aging franchise quarterbacks in the salary-cap era. The first signs were in 1993, when Joe Montana was traded.7 Then came Phil Simms — who, after a somewhat miraculous comeback season in 1993, was unceremoniously released the next spring. Troy Aikman might have retired anyway because of injuries, but he was ushered out the door. The same goes for Young, who was not welcome back in San Francisco. Warren Moon was passed around like a joint at a Phish concert toward the end of his career. Kurt Warner was benched. McNabb endured a fate worse than being benched: He was dealt to Washington. Favre had a reality-TV-style mess of a divorce from the Packers. Manning was let go once the Colts knew they had an opportunity to draft Andrew Luck.

These NFL teams have generally recognized that it’s better to break up with an aging quarterback a year too early than a year too late. And almost none of those decisions look bad in retrospect.8 Brees may still have something left — quite possibly enough to lead another franchise somewhere to a deep playoff run — but it’s probably time for he and the Saints to move on from each other.

Signed Super Bowl Champs New England Patriots and Tom Brady 38 years old.

Yup. I always prayed we'd follow the Green Bay Packers model but sadly it's way too late for that.

So all we need to do is find Aaron Rodgers, Steve Young, or Steve McNair and we'll be okay?

It's not time for Brees and the Saints to break up.

It's time for him to sign an extension and move some of his fricking money around.

Of all the big changes we could make, getting rid of Brees would be the worst one.

This is like when you have a coach that is pretty good but isnt winning championships and the fans are getting restless and start calling for him to be fired. But then no one actually knows who to replace him with. Which is like a huge fricking deal when you consider getting rid of someone.

Drew Brees gives this team the best chance to win other than Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers or Andrew Luck. I ride this wagon until the arms fall off. Or something.

Can I get a footnote on this and what teams didn't regret their franchise QB leaving?

Favre got followed up with Rogers, ok. Montana got followed up by Young. Who followed up Young? What about all the crap that Miami has gone through after Marino? Bills after Jim Kelly? Bulger did ok after Warner left, but only for a year or two, then it's been a shite show. How many 1st Round QBs have died in Buffalo, Jacksonville, Chicago, Oakland, Cleveland and Cincinnati? Everyone remembers Ben Rothlesburger, but nobody remembers the six years of Kordell Stewart before him. There's no guarantee after your QB leaves. That's why they make so much money now.

This makes no sense to me.. If he lead another team, why not the Saints??

Look, I know ppl are freaking out because we are 0-2 and lost to the Bucs at home. But to insinuate that there are other QB options out there better than Brees is just ridiculous. There are many more teams out there much worse off than us at QB. You can't ignore the fact that Brees is declining but our offensive line has been ATROCIOUS... People seem to forget how Brady had a slump when his offensive line was shitty.
