2006- Playoffs
2007- Missed playoffs
2008- Missed playoffs
2009- Super Bowl
2010- Playoffs
2011- Playoffs
2012- bullshite suspension, or likely Playoffs
2013- Playoffs
2014- Missed playoffs
Any Saints fan, especially that was a fan prior to 2006, has to be a complete dumbass to want to get rid of a coach who has produced those results with this historically shitty franchise.

Payton will not be fired, but, I don't think he is interested in giving up his personnel decision power to anyone, nor do I believe that he's interested in staying with the Saints past Brees's tenure.
I don't believe that there will be any front office changes after this season, no matter what happens. IMHO, the ownership is not very stable or strong at this moment, so, I think that ownership stands pat.
We might see a new DC next season, but, that's the extent of the changes.
Just my humble opinion.

And I'm not even talking about just winning and losing, I don't know that he can be expected to win with this roster, but we've had bad seasons with him before but I never even had to question whether he was good/smart coach until the end of last season. He just has not been a very smart coach lately.
Is he not that same guy?

That's a great post Lester.
shite, I'm only 28 and I can remember dreading each football season because I knew that the Saints and LSU would do nothing but lose. Louisiana football fans have gotten so spoiled and so entitled that it kind of takes the fun out of it...
It's like everybody has forgotten where we have come from

Payton should have free reign to coach as he sees fit absolute and without criticism until he dies? Is that what you're saying?
Anyone can see the guy hasn't been the same since his suspension. Maybe it's the lost year and the lost picks. I'll give him through this season as a grace period, but a continued lack of running game, unimaginative play calling, horrendous clock management, and shitty drafts and you have to start questioning the guy.
I'm a fan of the Saints franchise, not a particular player or coach.

That isn't what I am saying. But as I have watched this franchise go through coach after coach, I think the one who has produced by far the most impressive results should be given some leeway to get things fixed.

some personnel stuff and bad drafts have let the team get away from what they were, but it really doesn't change the on field stuff. Hiring Ireland is a nice start, at least he admits there might be a problem with the drafts. Firing Rob Ryan needs to be next, and a few of his other "buddies".
It's not just bringing in Ireland, they revamped the entire scouting department which was necessary. I agree with you that they should been more proactive a few years ago instead of being reactive when shite started to hit the fan from a scouting perspective. Changes were made & that's a positive.
The "good ole baw" system on the defensive coaching staff needs to end. It's been a terrible failure for the most part. This organization needs new blood when it comes to defensive coaches because player development is severely lacking especially with defensive linemen. If no changes are made this will eventually cost Payton his job.
There have been mistakes. No one can deny that. They should have taken whatever draft pick the Bills offered for Jahri Evans this summer whether it was a 5th, 6th or 7th rounder. A decent guard could have been found in those rounds instead the team is stuck with a washed up guard with no viable replacement at the moment. This made Payton look a hypocrite when he said before the draft that the protecting Brees was a top priority. It's not like Evans play has come out of nowhere. He's been in a decline since 2012. Trading for Unger was great but the move is being negated since Unger is surrounded on both sides by garbage.
I don't want Payton gone yet. I still think he's a good coach but he is painfully stubborn at times. What is promising though is that Payton has shown the willingness to make massive changes. He's going to have to do that once again with defensive staff this upcoming offseason. It's also past time to get Brees a stud WR along with upgrades at guard.
Also, I admire his loyalty to long term players like Colston & Evans but that loyalty is hurting the team overall when these guys are washed up. Tom Landry & Bill Walsh got rid of players before they would decline despite fans wishes. Bill Belichick has taken that mentality too. Payton needs to be the same way.

Me too. Some fans of various sports teams have a good sense of humor and refer to themselves as "rooting for the laundry".
When it comes to the Saints, I root for the laundry -- the team in Saints uniforms. Players, coaches, employees and owners come and go. I root for the guys in the Saints uniforms.
That said, I agree with the "disturbing tweet" in that I share his prediction/opinion.

quote:This is a very good thought, though. Remember, this is year one of Jeff Ireland overseeing college scouting. He's produced Kikaha, Anthony, Davison and Swann. They're all playing. And Payton being an offensive coach, he'll be able to find some offensive talent in the coming years.
Ideally id like to see them add some actual weapons at WR, shore up the OL, and continue to build the defense. I would love for Payton to over see that.
I think this could possibly be the beginning of the end of the first Payton era, but he should still remain the coach. What it will all hinge upon if he can stay with the team for his renaissance is if he can find another QB after Drew Brees. Does he hold on to him for too long? Does he move on and move on with the right talent at QB?
It will be interesting to see...I don't think Brees is done in Nola yet, but I do think barring something magical Brees won't be a Saint after 2016.

No, but he doesn't deserve to be fired at this point. Maybe after next year
He should be forced to give up playcalling rights if things continue. He should also lose control over being the definitive say on player personnel if that is the case. Let Ireland do his job

I agree to a point. Let Ireland be the decision maker when it comes to lineman & defensive players. That's his specialty. I still don't have a problem with Payton making the decision on skill position players. That's one aspect Payton has been pretty good at evaluating. There needs to input from both but both need to play to their strengths when it comes to the evaluation process.

bad
Why is this bad?
Just curious. He seems to have gotten lazy and not adjusted with the league. He has somehow become a terrible talent elevaluator and no longer has the creative edge.
I am very ready for the Payton era to end. I just hope that we can find the right people to put in place to move forward.

It's so hard to find a good coach these days. I mean, just before last year, you would find Payton in most top 5 NFL coaches lists, and it had been that way for 5-6 years. Is he not that same guy?
yeah but who's list? the same media that the colts to be great this year?
I don't think SP is a bad coach by any means. But his style was perfect for when he took over.
His style is not perfect for a total rebuild.
Thanks for the memories SP but he has to go to. We're not talking Bellichick or Parcells here. Good, not nearly great. He is certainly replaceable and should be replaced after the 2015 season.
