I have a Prius as well as two in my company fleet. Great gas mileage aside (50 mph), they are incredibly reliable vehicles. One of my fleet vehicles has over 170k and never a mechanical problem.

My wife dries a Prius. $20 fills it up and it'll get 500 miles on a tank if driving the interstate (with cruise on and only in texas/louisiana ).
My only gripe is it's uncomfortable as a mother fricker and F250 drivers always frick with me when I drive it

I drive one now and I always will for now on. I take my wife's SUV when I need more off road vehicle. Absolutely no point in taking a gas guzzler hours away on a fishing trip when my waders and rod fit into the car. I fill up every 3 weeks. Last year or so I take it hunting too. Just throw a tarp in the back and toss the deer in there - no problem no mess.

I got my wife a prius back in 2012 because she drives 30 miles to work every day. It's been great so far, incredible mpg and not as wimpy as I thought it would be. (by no means am I saying it has power ) We've had no issues with it yet. Knocks on wood.

My wife is on her SECOND prius. She loves them. Hatchback is handy, drives smooth and never had a battery problem. She buys used when the value is almost gone and drives up to 30k miles a year which makes most of the savings referenced "calculations" incorrect. She is saving a good bit of money driving the prius.
She bought both as one owner cars with 100k miles on them and has never had a battery issue.
Not sure what all the battery fears are about.
I have mixed feelings on the hybrids. I probably won't own one because I LOVE having a manual transmission.
Problem is that everybody is going to stop making cars with them soon.
Sucks.

I love the low maintenance costs, 45 m.p.g. average, and tax benefits.

Yep, had to buy our sedan used to get one, had to buy my truck new to get one in it. They'll always make something for us dinosaurs.

Not an issue with non Gen. 1 Toyota hybrids. Unless you plan on keeping it past 250k miles or so.

Yeah, I wasn't getting on her, but batteries on hybrids will fail, just like any other battery.
From what I've seen 250K is very optimistic and they start degrading well before that.
A lot of older hybrids become somewhat unsellable, due to the immediate need of a $2500 battery replacement.

Even at today's gas prices a hybrid saves me $3k a year. That works for me.

Not with the 2010-up Toyotas. There are many many of them in taxi fleets with over 250k on them. Taxi drivers aren't exactly easy on their vehicles, and these cars are holding up well.

Like I said, that was a first gen Toyota issue. Can't speak for other makes, but Toyota has the battery issues well in check.

While not technically a hybrid, if you are going for economy get the fuel friendly Mitsubishi Mirage. It's dirt cheap, and gets 44MPG. Oil only needs changing every 7,500 miles since it's a 3 cylinder that uses synthetic. It is literally the cheapest car on the market. I love mine. 0 to 60 in just under 11 seconds bitches.
