Public schools, by and large, are pretty terrible.
They need all the help, they can get.
The year my two oldest kids graduated, their public school put up more National Merit Finalists than all but 4 high schools in Louisiana. Smoked all the Catholic League schools except for Jesuit. I'm satisfied with it.

I'm raising my children to be critical thinkers. As such, I'm not really worried about them being exposed to Christianity or any other religion. Just because I don't believe in those religions doesn't mean they don't have good parts to learn from.

They can bring up their kids any way they choose - that doesn't change the fact that religion doesn't belong in public schools. If I were a principal and invited an atheist (or even a Muslim) to give an optional talk at school, I'd be fired on the spot.

We need a Freedom From Atheists Foundation because of imbeciles like you

Your whole argument is based upon hypotheticals
Anyone can win an argument if they get to make up facts.

What did I make up? What hypotheticals?
School invited pastor or priest to talk to kids during lunch hour, with chicken nuggets provided. Attendance optional. I don't think religion has ANY place in public schools. I ask how others would react. Their responses will in no way shape my reaction. I'm providing a topic of discussion on a message board about something that occurred. Where are the hypotheticals? My reasons for not making a big deal about it at the school are based on real life experience and what I've heard from friends who are atheists. Again, where are the hypotheticals?

You mean the kids at Jesuit who are being indoctrinated like sheep about a magic man who lives in the sky who controls everything for their pre-determined fate and relieves them of personal responsibility?

I wish everybody would just learn to get along with each other. Atheists should not be so uptight, and Christians shouldn't have such a persecution complex about getting slapped down when they do something over the line.

I don't have a problem with it in this format. It sounds like it wasn't in the class room. It was something that students had an option of whether or not they wanted to go. I think that people should be exposed to different ideas to decide what they think about them on their own.
I can understand people wanting this to be completely out of schools though because people do otherwise have access to it at churches if they really want to though.
How old are the kids?

TBH, I'm glad these "optional" events weren't around back in the day. I would have been expected to "voluntarily" go. I imagine a lot of these kids are in the same boat.

Who's "bitching"?
My aforementioned hypothetical would cause unprecedented uproar. Do you not agree?

Meh. There were a fair amount of atheists and agnostics in my class. Candid discussion even occasionally occurred in religion class, although I mostly just got through it. I thought it was interesting to learn about even if I didn't really believe it. I think it's better to face issues than to pretend that they don't exist. In some ways I'm glad I had to experience.

Uproar from people that look for things to go into an uproar about.

It's my idea that it's either all or none in public schools with this whole "visitor to the school" thing to try to get kids to come to bible study or what have you.
That was my point regarding Islam. If someone from a Mosque wasn't allowed to do the same thing this guy was doing, "recruiting" kids to come and learn about the religion--then it shouldn't be allowed at all. You either allow anyone and everyone to do this, which OF COURSE would cause a big problem...or you don't allow it period.
I'm a fan of the latter personally.

magine the uproar if children had the option to go learn about the teachings of Muhammad and were given more information on Islam. Parents would literally be shitting their pants
I guess that's really the issue. It wouldn't be equal opportunity for all religions. If someone wanted to give a presentation on Buddhism, Christian parents would probably freak the hell out. From my perspective, they both would be worth while.
Maybe the only way is the cut everything out because in general people aren't mature enough to be level headed.
