You're either young and naive or old and stupid - and for your benefit, I hope it's the former. I don't have to google it - I suggest that for you since you're out of touch with the real world.
Most people come into contact with, at most, a handful of people who are "out" atheists throughout their lifetime, and make assumptions accordingly. If you belong to an atheist group - even a small one that puts you in contact with just a room full of fellow atheists - you may have a slight understanding. You'll hear far too many stories about how people are even ostracized by their own families due to their atheism. Discrimination in the school or workplace I can be even more profound. I won't subject my kid to that while he's enjoying high school. Sorry you're naive and/or stupid.

I agree with you. I'm an open Atheist and I know at work I'm looked at and treated differently than my coworkers. There a few other "closet" Atheists at work who are probably smarter than me because they don't express their beliefs to anyone else except me sometimes.

Non believer here and I don't really have a problem with it, it was optional and if you went you get some nuggets.

Nothing related to any religion belongs in any public school. If anybody wants to learn about religion, that information should sought outside the structure of regular education.

Being open about my religious beliefs in most areas of my life would be a huge mistake. It's better to just keep my mouth shut and let people think I agree with them. Unfortunate way of the world.

This is what most people would call a hypothetical.

I guess that's one problem with people's perception of Atheists. It's much easier to be open about it on a message board than in real life and message boards tend to bring out the worst in people.

I don't see how making it optional is okay.

It still unnecessarily singles out the beliefs and upbringing of the minority of kids that choose not to attend. Public schools should not be creating these scenarios and implying endorsement of certain religions.

So you don't want to let your son listen to a preacher or priest. What are you afraid of? He doesn't have the right to make his own decisions about God? I bet he was afraid of what you would do to him if he attended.

Do you honestly believe there would not be an uproar?

I think religion should be practiced at home and in a church, thats it

Hmmmmm...sounds more like you're against religion period. After all, you just equated Jesus to Santa Claus, so It's probably safe to infer that you would prefer to just do away with all of it - why play on words? Just come out and state it. Are you afraid you'll come off as intolerant?

should not be in public schools yet its typical of this country to accept Christian Privilege and let it slide.
