quote:

In late August, Shannon Neuman and her husband Chris went to the municipal court in Calgary, Alberta, to get a divorce. They had already filled out the forms and taken the requisite seminars. They navigated the 24-story Courts Centre and dropped their papers off.

Then, on their way out, Chris and Shannon — no longer the Neumans — paused in front of a courthouse sign. They snapped a selfie, both smiling.

“Here’s Chris Neuman and I yesterday after filing for divorce!” Shannon wrote in a Facebook post that was shared 11,000 times within its first hours online. (Wrote Chris, in the comments: “I couldn’t have hand-picked a better ex-wife if I tried.”)

quote:

This is, incidentally, a common theme of #divorceselfies, no matter who posts them: The couples are always ecstatically, performatively happy. They’re optimistic about the future, and celebratory about the past. (A frequent, recurring caption: “Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened.”)

The logical consequence of the no fault divorce laws. No real surprise.

Divorces in Canada are only worth 0.75 of a divorce in the United States

Why can't divorced people just hate each other like the good ole days?

These people are ruining the sanctity of marriage, and their children. If you marry someone, procreate with them, then it is your parenting duty to deal with your issues and be loving parents to your kids.

Cool, your kids won't have to choose which parent to run to in the auditorium, but they will forever be scarred and wondering why their parents are shite.

I have a friend who is getting a divorce from her husband. She's posting selfies all day long and the single bro's are swimming like sharks on her wall. It's fascinating really

I'd divorce her, too. Shes ugly now, but was probably somewhat better looking when she first got married.

They obviously didn't understand that the emotion of infatuation isn't what builds a marriage that lasts, and just as infatuation fades, so will this initial emotional response. When the reality sets in and the initial emotions are gone, just like it did in their marriage, I doubt they are posting selfies like this.

Any shitty behavior can be rationalized with enough self delusion.

"Look sissy, mommy and daddy are sitting together. We should remember that when we go home in separate cars and sleep in separate homes."

They should make it as hard to get married as it is to divorce. Wait 6 months, several layers of bureaucracy, sworn income to debt statements. This process makes me never want to remarry. I sure as frick won't be posting attention whore selfies with him.

I appreciate their reasoning for an amicable divorce. Two happy divorced parents that get along and agree with how to raise their kid is better than married parents that hate each other and fight all the time.

I've been a part of both as a child.

Broadcasting this, or anything similar, on Facebook is just pointless. Why does everyone feel the need to share their private lives on the internet?
