Sounds like they're focusing more on original content and tv shows.

Thousands of movies will be removed from Netflix in the US after the streaming service decided not to renew a deal with distributor Epix.
Removed titles will include the Hunger Games and Transformers movies.
Netflix, which has more than 60 million subscribers worldwide, said it wanted to focus on exclusive content.
Rival US service Hulu will take on the Epix catalogue. "Our subscribers have been asking us for more, and more recent, big movies," Hulu said.
"We listened. Through this new deal with Epix, we are proud to now be able to offer a huge selection of the biggest blockbusters and premium films."
Netflix's deal with Epix - which was worth a reported $1bn (£650m) - runs up until the end of September 2015, at which point the films will disappear from the service.
Explaining the move to subscribers, Netflix's chief content officer Ted Sarandos wrote: "While many of these movies are popular, they are also widely available on cable and other subscription platforms at the same time as they are on Netflix and subject to the same drawn out licensing periods."
He then went on to list a variety of exclusive shows coming up on the service, including new work from Ricky Gervais, Idris Elba and Adam Sandler.
He also praised an upcoming Netflix-made documentary about Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards.
Sounds like they're focusing more on original content and tv shows.

They can do no wrong with original content right now.

Yeah, but this should put an end to any hopes of finding any quality film on Netflix streaming.

Yeah, but the movie catalog has been dwindling. I've got to admit I haven't watched a movie on Netflix in a while.

Who uses Netflix to watch blockbuster movies?
Netflix is great for their original content, TV series, documentaries, and indie/foreign films.

I feel like this is a bad move on Netflix's part

I think the movie distributers are boxing themselves into a corner. There is more television content than I can watch right now - I just started a trial with Hulu and I hate the interface and ads. I hate how they have "partial" series (Modern Family, for example) - but between what's available on the 2 services, plus HBO stuff on Amazon Prime - it's going to be tough for me to justify spending the time to watch anything other than proven classic films (and binge watching television series).

The worst part of this will be the complaint threads started by the morons that think because NetFlix killed Blockbuster it's supposed to be a new release movie service. They decided several years ago they were moving towards original content. They still have to figure out how to crack the water cooler problem. Narcos is getting decent buzz on this board, but it was just released. I bet it dies down in a week or 2 and then we only see a random thread about it once every month or 2 as opposed to the busy weekly threads for hit shows released more traditionally.

They put their shows on the splash page - but, unlike HBO Go/HBO On Demand, Amazon Prime or Hulu - they do not force ads for their content onto their subscribers - I guess they'll have to consider that.
One of the kudos I give to Netflix is - No Ads - and I've been a subscriber all the way back to the old disc in, disc out model.

Yeah I guess the DVD service is still there if you want it.

Seems weird the reason they aren't keeping widely popular movies is that their main rivals (cable and other subscription platforms) have them and people can see them there.

not really, especially if they are paying $1B to keep stuff that people can watch elsewhere
guess they figure they can put that money into original content or get other content that nobody else has access too

I like being able to find some good movies on Netflix, I don't go to the theater anymore so I am always way behind on new movies. Not going to complain though, there are other ways to watch movies and I love their original content.

They're just joining the club - I've struggled finding any new film worth watching on U-verse's movie channels, on-demand, and HBO GO. I've sat down with the wife more than once to use a free u-verse movie coupon and have nothing to show for it.

Am I the only one tht feels like Netflix wants to become just another channel? How are they much different from HBO Go? I remember when I had Netflix for movies and Hulu for TV.
Granted on that note, I won't drop it any time soon with Defenders coming up, plus Punisher.

$1 billion is a lot of money to spend on something that doesn't differentiate you from other services, especially when you have user data to suggest it's not the bulk of what your users consume anyway. That's the entire reason they started going away from being a "movie channel" in the first place. People were spending more hours watching TV shows than movies so they shifted their strategies accordingly. What is going to help them more, having 6-10 "marquee" movies a year, or 6-10 new original series? I don't know the cost of the shows, maybe it's only 3-5 originals, but I have a feeling DareDevil was bigger for them and will attract/keep more subscribers than The Wolf of Wall Street.

besides being half the price with triple the content, not much
