Wasn't it originally called Denali? That sounds cooler anyway

then you should be for this since it is changing it back to the original name

you should have been against it being called Mt. McKinley

I may be a curmudgeon, but I wasn't around in 1917 when it was named Mt. McKinley. So, the only change that I've experienced in my lifetime has been the most recent change to Denali.

Denali is an Athabascan word meaning “the high one” or “great one.

I am thrilled to hear that Denali is finally getting it's real name made official again.

Correct. Alaskans have only used McKinley when talking to tourists. It's Denali.

Only by 1 of the 7 languages spoken by the indigenous people of Alaska. It had 6 other names, too.

nice edit, bro.

maybe b/c the alaskan natives have been asking for it for decades. seems more fitting than being named after some white dude from Ohio, who never set foot in the State.

No...but he was pivotal in the early negotiations in the Alaska Boundary Dispute with Canada.

Op, you sound like a true idiot:

quote:

Senator Lisa Murkowski, Republican of Alaska, introduced legislation in January to rename the peak, but Ohio lawmakers sought to block the move. In June, an Interior Department official said in testimony before Congress that the administration had “no objection” to Ms. Murkowski’s proposed change.

In a video released on Sunday, Ms. Murkowski cheered Mr. Obama’s decision.

“For generations, Alaskans have known this majestic mountain as ‘the great one,’” she said in the video, appearing in front of the snow-topped mountain, its peak reaching above the clouds. “I’d like to thank the president for working with us to achieve this significant change to show honor, respect and gratitude to the Athabascan people of Alaska.”

You are being naive if you think Obama did this just because the Alaskans were asking for it to happen.

McKinely: We want this as a state.
Canada: Ok, sure thing buddy.

Thus goes the tale of the great Alaskan Boundary Dispute.

well of course, errythang Bamz does is racial. Leroy Denali was a well known black gold miner who explored Alaska in the 1870s.

Imma petition for an Executive Order to rename your team the "Barners", to eliminate all this Tiger/Plainsmen/War Eagle confusion. I'm sure you'll complain that your heritage is under assault.

Yea, but the natives who lived in the region called it Denali. And the mountain was generally referred to as Denali by them as well as non natives until it was changed. The other 6 names were never widely recognized.

Anyone who wants to call it McKinley sides with Ohio dipshits. I'm with the people of Alaska on this one, they want it Denali, let it be called Denali. One of the many presidents over the past few decades before Obama should of done this... If people in Ohio have a problem with it, like they have every time this comes up again, name some flat field in your own shitty state after McKinley.

Lived up there 3 years, we always called it Denali.

The timing was dubious, but it was going to happen at some time anyway.

Any other naming issues that you would like to leave on the hands of foreigners?

Perhaps we should have the Portuguese vote on what we'll call our Grand Canyon?

I'm sorry, but the people of Alaska includes the white people from the lower 48 that moved up there as well. I'm from Louisiana, when I moved up there, I stopped referring to it as McKinley as well. All kinds of people up there want it changed back.
