The way I interpreted the OP is why not focus a little more on preventing people from getting robbed, stabbed and shot in New Orleans and at gas stations in Baton Rouge rather than trying to bust every swinging dick who had an old fashioned at dinner and decided to drive home.

For the overwhelming majority of us, the odds of being killed or injured by a drunk driver is exponentially higher than being murdered.

They should have a slogan about check points , not getting pulled over.

What exactly is the problem? Seems like a good thing, to me.

It doesn't rhyme. It's like the guy who thought up, "Click it or ticket," needed some extra cash and really started scraping the bottom of the barrel.

A lot of "drunk driving" stats are very misleading. They are kept that way by the likes of MADD and police departments that make a killing on DWI checkpoints. "You just blew $10,000", right?

They are

If I'm driving at .08 when someone runs a red light and I hit them that's going down as an alcohol related accident

DWIs are huge money generators for local governments. Same with inspection stickers.

It's about ROI and has little to do with safety.

Ever drive through Pennsylvania?

When you are driving the roads there, it's a constant barrage of signs with slogans like that on them.

It really seems like there is a sign every 75'.

"Dive Sober of Get Pulled Over" is a national campaign that is paid for by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. All the ads you see and the publicity is due to NHTSA grant funding. NHTSA also provides grant funding for additional DUI/DWI officers in local municipalities.

In a couple of years or less, they will change the slogan of the national campaign to something else equally generic, like "If you Drink you go to the Clink" or some such shite.

"Alcohol related" is a misnomer. If you drink a beer and then get rear ended at a read light, the accident is considered "alcohol related". A more accurate stat would be accidents caused by impaired people. (If you are drunk at a red light and get rear ended, again, not your fault....but will sure be reported that alcohol was a factor).

Sounds like they were drunk when they thought of it.

What would you do if you had old women riding your arse constantly bitching, yelling, and threatening you if you didn't do exactly what they wanted?

Serious question-how many fatalities do the stats show due to drunk drivers, versus fatalities due to acute lead poisoning, stabbing, beatings, etc?

Every dollar spent on this type of program is worth it IMO.

I would assume La is at least as bad as SC, and here are some stats.

Between 2008-12, we had 17,503 fatal or severe injury collisions. Over 1/4 involved alcohol. That's pretty freaking significant IMO.

Way more than were killed or injured by gun violence in SC, but doesn't get near the headlines.

ETA: why would anyone downvote this? Don't like stats?

This is 100% incorrect.

All funding for DUI awareness is coming from Federal or State level, who don't profit anything off of DUI's.

I'd rather the state make an effort to teach people how to drive on I-10. Seems like every day, there is an accident on the basin bridge or on I-10 between lafayette and Crowley that stops east/westbound traffic.

First off, a lot of these campaigns are the result of federal grants. So the LSP gets to spend money on all kinds of new toys to use on the campaign with the tab picked up by the taxpayers.

Secondly, DWI industry is a huge moneymaker. Courts get money from fines, attorneys get money, the system gets money.

Thats what its really all about: $$$.
